Got beads?

The Beading Divas to the Rescue have been hard at work as have the honorary Beading Divas and others who have participated in our project to race funds for animal charities.

We are not a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization. We are simply a group of creative women who want to give back.  All sales of bracelets go to help the animal charity of the month. Here is our donation history.

In order to continue our endeavors we need beads!

We have gotten this far because of the generosity of our friends and the community as they have given beads to us as well as our finds at yard sales/thrift stores and the occasional bead store/gem show splurge.

If you have beads collecting dust in your closets and craft boxes, please consider giving them so we can continue to raise funds for animal charities.

You can drop the beads at Silver Sea Jewelry & Gifts, 330 N. 4th Ave., 624-9954 or email karynzoldan@yahoo.com to arrange pick up. If you have any ideas how we can glean more beads please email Karyn or post a comment.

Thank you

The Beading Divas are: Michelle Caillet, Cynthia David, Loren Dawn, Lizzie Mead, Angy Shearer, Glenda Taylor, and blogger, Karyn Zoldan.

Help the Beading Divas help Wanda  who takes greyhounds from the South Tucson dog park and brings them to her ranch prior to the dogs going to adoption groups. At her ranch just south of Tucson, the hounds with the broken legs and broken hocks are rehabilitated and treated with TLC. Other hounds without health problems and injuries await adoption groups. It’s a huge job and she needs your help. Sometimes she has as many as 25 dogs in limbo. It’s better the dogs are waiting at her ranch than to linger at the track.

You can also follow what dogs are coming off the track via Facebook at “Tucson Greys Broken Hock Page.”

These are the things that are needed on a daily basis to care for the broken leg and broken hock hounds and the not broken leg

Jett lounging at Greyt Escape

Hey world and Tucson – posted by Jett Greyhound

Life is greyt here.

Unlike the previous greyhound who lived here, the Drama Queen, I don’t chew stuff. Instead I just move things around especially things that smell like my person Karyn.  She calls me The Decorator.

So much has happened since I blogged last time. I am supposedly exuberant…whatever that means.

One day Karyn took me to this cool place where I met a lot of greyhounds. Then another day she took me again but left without me. At first I didn’t like that but I liked the dogs and Michelle and felt right at home at Greyt Escape. I even got to counter surf some cheese and bark at the javelina from afar. Man, they are ugly. When Karyn came back for me, I did the happy dance.

Another day Karyn came to give me a big hug and put her arms around me and started crying. I thought maybe she hurt that hole in her heart. She rocked me gently and said, “Baby boy, I am so very sorry that you raced 150 times.  Let the good times roll. I’m going to spoil you rotten.”  I can hardly wait!

I’ve been meeting lots of people. There’s an endless parade of people who come to visit us.

Now I am doing clicker training. She clicks this thing and I come and then I get a treat. What’s not to like?

Here’s a little secret. I am the perfect height to put my head on the dining room table. People who don’t have dogs won’t like this story.  Anyway one day Karyn was starting to eat a Chipotle bowl but got up to get a drink. When she turned around I had stuck my entire face in the bowl. She yelled, “LEAVE IT!”  I backed away from the table but there were incriminating lettuce strands sticking out of my mouth. I was this close to getting some of that chicken.

Fortunately, my lovely person Karyn laughed.  Ha ha ha. She has the best sense of humor.

By for now.

What you see is what your JETT.

Opa & Riley, rescued greyhounds enjoy life

September is almost over and we think the Beading Divas may have had a record month of fund-raising for Arizona Greyhound Rescue but we won’t divulge the amount until October.

In October we start with another local animal charity — stay tuned.

Here’s a terrific testimonial that I’d like to share. It came from Diane M. in Florida:

“Well, just had to tell you. . .my bracelet arrived from Lizzie and I was blown away at how lovely it is……It arrived an hour ago and I just got off her Etsy site after ordering 3 more….great bracelets, wonderful cause, she must be a lovely lady……Hope I can part with the bracelets, they’re supposed to be gifts, at least a couple of them are…..

I love it…………”

The Beading Divas enjoy spreading happiness to the animal rescue groups we help and the people who buy and cherish our bracelets.

Tucson adopted greyhound - Quinn Jose

Sales of bracelets for September 2010 will go towards Arizona Greyhound Rescue’s dental bills.

Dental problems are common for retired racing greyhounds due to their soft and substandard 4D diet while racing. Unfortunately, racing greyhounds are not given anything to chew on to prevent plaque building up which can cause gingivitis. Greyhounds rescued by Arizona Greyhound Rescue receive one professional dental cleaning soon after entering our leased kennel. In most instances but not always, once a retired racing greyhound is fed premium kibble, given a Nylabone to chew on, and regular dental care, gingivitis can be avoided.

Sometimes bad things happen to people with good intentions.

Adopters face challenges that negatively impact their lives and the lives of their hounds.

In this case, the husband died abruptly and left his wife with three greyhounds. One mischievous male named Wayne rebounded back to Arizona Greyhound Rescue.

While in his foster home, it became apparent that the hound’s breath was really bad. Arizona Greyhound Rescue learned later that the hound had been scheduled for a dental prior to family’s catastrophe.

Upon examination, the veterinarian found that Wayne had pronounced gum disease and would need many extractions: 31 teeth to be exact. The cost was approximately $3,000.

Arizona Greyhound Rescue dug into their coffers.

Greyhound foster parent angels Dale and Jim took care of Wayne during this difficult time, nursing him back to health. These wonderful guys have a history of nurturing wounded hounds, giving them a second chance to be a family companion. Both were thrilled when Wayne started to play like a puppy with their other greyhound once his gums healed.

In August 2010, Wayne was adopted and now has a new home to hang his leash.

Greyhound from Guam

UPDATE: GAIN WON!!!

Hi All:

I hope you don’t mind the group email.  I’m just elated.  Cartier and all his beauty worked another miracle.  As you can see below we won the Grand Prize of the World’s Best Pet Parent Contest.  Thank you all for your continued support during these months of voting voting and more voting.  It warms my heart that Cartier and all his glory is still helping his fellow greyhounds in spirit.

My warmest regards,

Dana and My Angel Boy Cartier – Mommy still misses you sweet thing

Greyhound adopter Dana Provost adopted a Guam greyhound named Cartier (see photo). In a very short time after coming to the U.S., he became a pet therapy dog and took Las Vegas by storm.

Sadly, Cartier after surviving the cruelties of racing in Guam, succumbed to fatal kidney disease. We’re thankful he was fortunate to come to the U.S. and live his life as a beloved pet before he died.

Dana Provost entered the PETFINDER.COM WORLD’S BEST PARENT CONTEST and has designated the prize money to go to Guam Animals in Need (GAIN). Although a U.S. territory, Guam is like a third-world country when it comes to the way it treats its animals. If it wasn’t for the wonderful volunteers at GAIN and the Greyhound Protection League and numerous U.S. adoption groups and friends, hounds like Cartier would be left for dead.

Please help Dana help GAIN by voting in the Petfinder contest.

The prize money is:
Grand Prize: $10,000
Runner Up: $5,000
Honorable Mention (10 winners): $1,000

So vote! And vote often! (photo of Dana & Cartier) – You can register at top right of page

Since this contest is worldwide, please feel free to cross post and link to this blog post to maximize voting potential.  Wouldn’t it be grand for the global greyhound community to come together to honor the efforts of GAIN and greyhounds everywhere?  (Dana is the only greyhound finalist.)

Voting began on Friday August 27, 2010 and runs through 11:59 PM ET October 6, 2010.  It is FREE to vote and a wonderful way to support a fellow greyhound adopter and GAIN.

You will be required to register at Petfinder.com but you have the option NOT to receive any emails from Petfinder.com by unchecking the boxes after your password entry.

Each user will only be permitted to ONE VOTE PER DAY.  Voting requires filling out the secure Captcha code to prevent fraud.

Let’s remember Cartier and help GAIN put some money in its coffers to help the island’s dogs.
