Galgos del Sol river rescue

Galgos del Sol river rescue

Galgos del Sol rescues take all forms — We are prepared to run out of the house at any time to jump fences, search through orange groves in 100º weather, tiptoe around private property, shimmy into impossibly tight spaces, plunge into tunnels, and dodge traffic.

Our car is always prepared with leashes, treats, and a chip scanner. We are perpetually on call. Sometimes a galgo is ready to be saved and a few kind words do the trick.

Galgos del Sol

Ravaged galgo in Spain

Other times, terrified of humans and ravaged with hunger, these dogs will stay just out of reach for months.

We study their routines, leave food and water, and slowly build their confidence until they can be approached. One galgo, Chase, eventually allowed one of our volunteers to sit near him, but as soon as she raised her arms to slip a lead over his head, he’d bolt. After sitting with him for hours one day, she began singing softly. He fell asleep deeply enough for the lead to finally be attached.

We have been bitten and covered with poop, vomit, pee, worms, fleas and ticks on more occasions than can recounted. One galgo was so frantic once we got him into the car that he chewed through the lead restraining him and leapt on the dashboard throwing himself against the front window to escape.

When we rescue a dog, regardless of time, day or night, we alert our vet that we are on our way for a dog to be evaluated and treated. No matter how many dogs we rescue, it is always a rush and never predictable.

Their ultimate gratitude makes all the sleepless nights crawling on hands and knees through fields with a torch hoping to catch a glint of an eye, more than worthwhile.

Please contribute to them directly, find a bracelet in our ONLINE Etsy store, or find a bracelet to fall in love with at the following Tucson venues Thank you.

Galgos del Sol fundraiser

Meet Galgos del Sol

For the month of June, Beading Divas to the Rescue is thrilled to be fundraising for GALGOS DEL SOL.

In 2007, Galgos del Sol (GDS) founder Tina Solera, moved to southern Spain with her husband and two young children. Little did Tina realize that their decision would change her life forever as well as the lives of hundreds of galgos desperately needing help.

Always an animal lover, Tina could not tolerate the treatment of the Spanish galgos, a traditional hunting dog breed, and decided to devote herself to their rescue, rehabilitation and re-homing. The galgos with their indomitable spirits, needle-noses and long legs, completely captured her heart. One galgo rescued, gave way to another and another until it became clear that the Solera household was vastly undersized for the number of dogs that needed rescuing. There were nights that Tina slept in her car with a newly rescued galgo simply because there wasn’t any more room.

With no prior experience in running a non-profit, Tina established Galgos del Sol, a registered Spanish charity, and became proficient in the Spanish language. Murcia, the area in which the Soleras reside, is a prolific hunting ground making the demands on GDS relentless. In addition to the Solera’s finca, GDS has galgos and podencos kennelled and fostered in various locations locally and has relationships with organizations in France, Belgium, Germany, the UK, and the USA for adoptions.

With over 100 dogs in the care of GDS, major fundraising is underway to build proper kennels to house all the dogs in one facility that will include an education center and provide space for a much desired volunteer program. Presently GDS dogs are in three locations and have reached a critical point. They must expand in order to provide safety and security for the dogs. The land has been purchased, architectural designs have been approved by the local council, and electricity and water brought into the property. Next steps are raising the funds to build the kennels and a small building for storage, minor veterinary care and to serve as a meeting place for volunteers.

In addition to Spain, GDS is a registered charity in the UK and a 501c3 in the US.
