Here’s more information about Hoofs n Horns, March 2014
When a Wrong Turn Goes Right
written by Shelby, Hoofs n Horns Farm Sanctuary. Hoofsnhorns Farm Sanctuary specializes in farm animals who have been rejected, abandoned, abused or at risk of being killed because of their sex, a medical issue or just being worn out and deemed non productive.
———–
In search of a hay grower on a sunny Saturday afternoon, I took a wrong turn and soon noticed a dusty small corral at the side of the road cram packed with sad looking roping cattle in need of food and shade.
I noticed a small wet bundle laying behind one of the cows. She had just given birth!
Austin was at least two months premature according to the rancher and “as long as he could stand he would be fine,” but over the next several hours he lay in the dirt being pawed and pushed by his mother and other cows trying to get him to stand, he could only flop over.
By nightfall the rancher finally realized he wasn’t going to stand and if he did, would probably not be tall enough to nurse his mother. Cold, dirty and hypoglycemic we wrapped him in a warm blanket, rubbed honey on his gums, attempted to get some warm goats milk into him and promised him he’d be okay. By midnight he knew how to suckle the bottle.
We named him Austin since he is half Texas longhorn and have a house cow for almost a year. He had no body fat; his little soft fur looked like an old velour blanket thrown over a hard wood chair. He wasn’t developed enough to have much fur or even tail hair, his tail looked like a small fuzzy rat tail. His soft hooves were not ready to hold him yet and his knobby little knees were way too big.
That first week, he weighed just 19 lbs (even mini cows are born 30-40 lbs). With lots of love and prayers and a heating blanket he was cuddled and fed and as days wore on he progressed more every minute.
Within a week he could stand, wobbly and too unsteady to walk yet, but soon. Then in months as he grew and developed more muscle he could walk, then play. His favorite thing was to jump onto my bed. He had been raised in laps and on the couch, so why not? He napped with tiny dogs, followed us around for love, continued to grow and thrive.
Today Austin is still small for his breed but he is a big red beautiful boy with horns that span almost three feet. With those horns, he is gentle around baby goats, children and others who visit.
He lives in the general population corral with older retired cows thrown away from the dairy industry, a mini bull who was saved from a rodeo act, and approximately 70 goats rescued or retired here at HoofsnHorns Farm Sanctuary.
Austin was put in our path on an ordinary day, it was a miracle he was still alive at the end of that first day and a miracle he has grown the sweet beautiful fella that he is today. Had we not been led down that “wrong” road that day and seen him laying on the ground, pestered the rancher until he agreed to at least watch over him and finally allow us to come and get him, Austin would have surely been dead by morning.

The Sanctuary finally became a non profit 501(c)3 in the last year and is now able to accept donations, offer tax receipts and more.
Tours, birthday parties and school groups are welcome! There is a tiny farm store where you can purchase tshirts, handmade goats milk soap and other goodies.
It is a peaceful place where miracles happen and you can feel it as soon as you arrive. All food, water, shelter and expenses are paid for from donations, sales in the farm store and animal sponsors.
Hay is over $14 a bale right now and these critters need between 4 and 5 bales a day, in addition to grain, supplements, medical costs and other items for the special needs residents.
Formerly a paramedic, Shelby takes care of these animals full time, 24/7/365. She provides medical and emergency treatment, is their nursemaid and friend. Often they have special needs such as a diet, physical therapy such as being supported, exercised and rehabiliated to walk, eat and other basic functions. They are allowed to live among friends and family and never want for anything again, their lives are full loved and peaceful.
Hoofs N Horns takes donations on the website, at the farm, in the form of feed, and directly to their feed store on Avra Valley / Sandario (Post Feed and Supply). It is also possible to sponsor individual animals or the farm in general.
During the month of March 2014, you can buy bracelets online to benefit Hoofs n Horns. Check out the stunning selection of bracelets here.

Beading Divas to the Rescue is happy to be kicking back during the month of July eating bon-bons and trying to stay cool in Tucson.
However, we thought you might like some news.
Everyone enjoy a good summer read and there’s nothing better than Dogtripping by author David Rosenfelt. In this mostly hilarious true story he and his wife moved from California to Maine with 25 rescued dogs. Be sure to check it out.
Thanks to everyone who continues to send us beads or drop off beads at Silver Sea Jewelry. We so appreciate all the community has done to help continue our mission of raising money for animal charities.
And while we are not selling bracelets during July, one of the Beading Divas – Michelle, has two Etsy sites (not associated with bracelet sales) for dog accessories and Chella Bella for yoga bags, eye glass cases, sleep masks, scarves & more. Check them out!
In other local news, there was horrible overcrowding at the county pound – Pima Animal Care Center. Too many dogs found as strays or returned and not enough foster homes or adoption. That means more euthanasia especially to older dogs and dogs who end up in sick bay. So if you considering adopting a dog — now is the time to do it. Adopt don’t shop! Check out some fabulous dogs at PACC.
Speaking of — No Kill Pima County is hosting a free community event on Saturday January 27 at Windmill Inn Suites from 6 to 8 pm. You can meet 20 rescue groups and learn about what their foster care needs are. More foster homes saves more lives. Think about it.
Here’s a happy FOREVER HOME story about Duchess.
And if you’re still reading, check out my newest favorite video by Tucson’s own Amber Norgaard…it will make your heart soar as well as the wonderful work by the Tucson Wildlife Center.

Basco has suffered a complex broken hock injury and now will get a second chance as a beloved pet. He needs a quiet foster home for rest & recuperation. He is being cared for by Veterinarian Specialty Clinic here in Tucson and will require 3 months healing time.
So far Basco has earned the title Mr. Mellow by the vets and vet staff who have had the pleasure of caring for him.
Southern Arizona Greyhound Adoption (SA Greys) is hoping that you will consider buying a bracelet or two, making a donation for Basco’s medical needs. Also if you can volunteer or foster — if not Basco, there is always a need for foster homes and volunteers.
In Tucson you can buy one-of-a-kind coil beaded bracelets for $20 at these locations:
–Silver Sea Jewelry & Gifts, 330 N. 4th Avenue, 624-9954
–Clues Unlimited Mystery Book Store, 3146 E. Fort. Lowell Road (SE corner Country Club), 326-8533 (closed Sun/Mon)
–Sissy’s Pet Grooming Salon, 7350 N. La Cholla Blvd (in Albertsons Shopping Center), 229-9898
-A K Jensen Apparel, (St. Philips Plaza), 4280 N. Campbell Ave., Suite 212, 529-2775
The above locations accept cash or make a check payable to Southern Arizona Greyhound Adoption.
Or if you are not local, consider buying them from our secure online store (add $5.50 S&H).
Basco is like many retired racing greyhounds. He deserves a second chance just like the hounds in your heart and on your couch. Can you help?
Thank you

This month Beading Divas to the Rescue is proud to sell bracelets to benefit Southern Arizona Greyhound Adoption (aka SA Greys). This group is an all-volunteer, 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to finding loving forever homes for greyhounds throughout Tucson, Southern Arizona, and Southern New Mexico.
As with every breed specific adoption group, every dollar has meaning and purpose. For instance, here’s an idea how much it costs to transition ONE retired racing greyhound for ONE month.
$100 – checkup & fecal test
$4 probiotics for one dog for a week
$22 dewormer (Panacur)
$5.10 Heartgard Plus (per dog after negative SNAP test)
$6 Bordatella shot (to prevent kennel cough)
$11 Frontline Plus (per dog per month)
$192 Kennel per dog per month (includes dry dog food)
$340.10 plus…
$260 for spay or neuter, dental, SNAP test, microchip, baseline blood work and any shots due
$600.10 per dog per month
Yet, the cost to adopt a greyhound is $250. Why $250? It’s what the local market will bear.
Do the math! For every retired racing greyhound, Southern Arizona Greyhound Adoption must raise an additional $350 in order to break even.
Is it worth it? Of course! Giving a chance to a retired racing greyhound to enjoy being a cherished family pet is priceless.
That’s why this Tucson greyhound adoption group needs your help.
In Tucson you can buy one-of-a-kind coil beaded bracelets for $20 at these locations:
–Silver Sea Jewelry & Gifts, 330 N. 4th Avenue, 624-9954
–Clues Unlimited Mystery Book Store, 3146 E. Fort. Lowell Road (SE corner Country Club), 326-8533 (closed Sun/Mon)

If you don’t want any dazzling eye candy for your wrist, consider making a donation directly to the group perhaps volunteering.

Tucson Beading Divas Celebrate and Do Brunch 2012/07/02

Yesterday six of the original seven Beading Divas to the Rescue went to brunch at Shlomo & Vito’s Deli in Tucson.
We sat outside under the mist which was cool until it wasn’t.
The food was quite delicious and the service adept. I loved my scrambled eggs with lox & onions and latkes and toast. Their $5 Bloody Mary was spicy and potent. Clean plates abounded and everyone proclaimed their sandwiches tasty. I could’ve gone for an egg cream to polish off the meal but decided against it. And oh, those ginormous macaroons in the bakery case on the way out called my name but I kept walking. They were so tempting I could plotz. Now I wish for just a few sweet crumbs.
We noshed. We laughed. We gabbed. We gossiped. We talked about the future of Beading Divas to the Rescue.
We congratulated ourselves for RAISING $46,700 BY SELLING ONE TWENTY DOLLAR BRACELET AT TIME for worthy animal charities.

Beading Divas to the Rescue are taking a much needed break for the month of July.
There will be no bracelet sales online or at any of the local venues. If some sales slip by, the funds will be added to the August group, whoever that might be.
We’ll be back in August with a new charity and a new attitude or not.
In the meantime if you want to show us your favorite Beading Diva bracelets, send photos of bracelets on your wrist or dangling from the chandelier or whatever to karynzoldan@yahoo.com and tell us why you like your bracelet so much.
Stay cool!

Ironwood Pig Sanctuary, 11th Anniversary, Bracelet Fundraiser
In May 2011, Ironwood Pig Sanctuary celebrated their 11th anniversary. Hundreds and hundreds of pigs have come to the Ironwood Pig Sanctuary on the outskirts of Tucson. Most of the pigs will live their lives here, free of harm, and some will be adopted.
Think all pigs are fat? Think again. Many pigs come to the Sanctuary arrive with bones sticking out from being malnourished or hooves so long they can barely walk or pigs so fat they cannot breathe or open their eyes.
What amazing stories the Ironwood Pig Sanctuary has to tell.
What humble dedicated volunteerism they show the rest of us.
At their Ironwood Sanctuary they receive a home, love, security, and a routine they can depend on.
The top photo shows Dexter and Jeannie who share a couple things in common. They are two spotted hogs and both arrived as strays with injuries. Jeannie has been at the Sanctuary for a few years. She was a stray in Oracle, Arizona, where she had been coming to visit a family with horses to find food. She had acquired some bad injuries from dogs or coyotes, but survived those and has been here for many years. She and Laverne, one of our old potbelly pigs, have bonded and have remained companions for all these years.
Dexter arrived at Ironwood in December 2010. He was a young baby as well. He was found on a hiking trail in Phoenix by a man when Dexter ran out in front of him and the man followed him back to the parking lot where a small carrier and some food was left. Someone had just dumped him there. He was very dehydrated and unable to keep water down. The man took him home and Dexter recovered. Dexter was brought to Ironwood. It was later discovered he had a BB gun shot below his eye. The BB was removed without any lasting injury.
These pigs have amazing stories. You can read more on the website and follow antics on their Facebook page.

Mother’s Day is Sunday May 13. Do you have a gift for MoM?
Why not get a MoM a gift filled with meaning? For every Beading Divas bracelet sold during the month of May, the entire amount of $20 goes directly to help the dogs of Tucson Cold Wet Noses. This rescue takes dogs from the Pima Animal Care Center (the pound) and rescues them in the 11th hour. You can read about Shy Boy’s amazing story.
Locally, you can buy bracelets at:
-Silver Sea Jewelry & Gifts, 330 N. 4th Avenue, 624-9954
-Coyote Wore Sideburns Hair Salon, 630 N. 4th Avenue, 623-7341
While on 4th Avenue you can also go out to lunch or dinner or coffee with your MoM.
In the northwest part of town, you can buy bracelets at:
-Sissy’s Pet Grooming Salon, 7350 N. La Cholla Blvd (in Albertsons Shopping Center), 229-9898
Coiled bracelets are one-of-a-kind made with donated beads; one size fits most. Bracelets come with a paw charm.
You can also buy bracelets online (add $5.50 S&H). All bracelets sales sold online will be matched by an anonymous Cold Wet Noses adopter. So, one bracelet for $20 translates into $40 to CWN. It’s a generous offer and an encouragement to shop online. Bracelets will not be mailed in order to arrive by Mother’s Day.
