Tucson greyhound: Rider weathers another storm-heart arrythmia 2010/04/30

What a handsome greyhound!

As you may recall this blog started as a way to pay the $14,300 vet bills after Lizzie Mead’s hit and run accident in October 2008. Rider had his spleen removed and sewn back up with 400 stitches and Opal’s eye popped out but was put back in. Very dramatic!

Here’s an update of what’s going on NOW at the Lizzie Mead household now…written by Diva Lizzie

Rider seemingly has weathered this storm the way he survives everything this existence has thrown at him…in the most frightening and expensive way possible! I was very scared that “this was it” because they were careful to not paint me too pretty a picture because matters of the heart muscle are serious business.

The risk of sudden death has passed (PHEW) He is off his meds-in a good way 🙂 His heart is functioning perfectly, and the arrhythmia is not present anymore. I have a stethoscope that I listen to his heart with three times a day and take his heart rate, it has been perfect each time. After multiple echo-cardiograms he has proven to be “My strong, sweet, handsome guy” and gotten thru yet *another* life threatening episode with grace and dignity. All the vets and techs love him, and say he “really is the best dog, such a easygoing guy”.

The ladies (Opal and Mizz Bird) have been very magnanimous with their brother, and are calm around him still. This is a good development for Mizz Bird, who’s greatly improved by the introduction of some calm! She is doing her spinning outdoors, and sleeping the whole night thru on my feet. Her red devil ball is a constant companion, second choice is the plush Easter bunny that I got for cheap after the holiday had passed. Her adoption papers have been sent in-so it becomes truly official…I am a three grey girl.

I love Bird, more every day.

That girl is so happy in my house, she is a joy to me-and apparently for no one else…Well, she gives ya a few days-then she lives up to her middle name which is “Hell-raiser”. All the dogs have middle names actually. “Rider Kabarkus D.O.G” aka the “Infamous D.O.G.” aka “Bubba”, Opal Didymus, and “Mizz Bird Hell-raiser Mead”. Rider gets a new nickname for every crisis 🙂

Opal continues to revel in her occupation as “Fun Police/Hall Monitor” of the household. If any animal is having too much fun, or is being too loud-she gives em a talking to and they knock it off. The cat (Orion) was rather surprised to be scolded, and gave her a talking to right back the other day…more of a hiss and some frantic-claws action. Opal is not dissuaded from her calling by protestations of the feline.

Harmony greyhound enjoys retirement

Harmony, a 9-year-young ex-racer, knows how to make herself comfortable.

She raced for about two years in Colorado and ended up in Tucson, perhaps traveling with an organization like Greyhound Support Transport.

Harmie has lived with Cynthia, one of the Beading Divas, for six years and enjoys visiting with the beaders when they gather at her house. She has a 100-watt unforgettable smile and loves retirement life. In her spare time or when nobody is paying much attention, she shreds toilet paper rolls for merriment sake.

For the month of April, all bracelet proceeds will be donated to Greyhound Support Transport of Florida. This non-profit organization works hard to move Florida’s excess of retired racing dogs to adoption groups in non-racing states.

Buy bracelets online via Lizzie Stardust on Etsy.com or at Silver Sea Jewelry & Gifts in Tucson located at 330 N. 4th Avenue, 520-624-9954.

Bracelets for Helping Hounds

Since April is Adopt-a-Greyhound month, it’s fitting that the Beading Divas to the Rescue sell bracelets for Greyhound Support Transport.

Greyhound Support Transport is located in Florida where there are still 13 dog tracks operating. This group hauls retired racing greyhounds to non racing states and Canada, so the dogs can be placed into adoption groups in states without race tracks, where the supply does not override the demand.

Greyhound Support Transport’s most recent haul was to Oregon. 36 dogs  are on their way to finding a new life, a second chance. The cost of this haul was $5,250.00.

Greyhound Support Transport has an ambitious schedule. They want to haul dogs to non racing states every six weeks. Their next haul will be to the East Coast.

For Sale: Coiled bracelets are one-of-a-kind, handmade from donated beads. One size fits most. Bracelets cost $20 – all this goes directly to GST. If you buy a bracelet online at Lizzie Stardust / Etsy.com, please add $3 for shipping & handling/US, or $4 Canada/elsewhere.

If you’re local to Tucson, come by Silver Sea Jewelry & Gifts, 330 N. 4th Ave. (520-624-9954) or Desert Rose Homeopathic Pharmacy (smaller selection) 2550 E. Ft. Lowell Road. (520-918-0100)

If you are not into bracelets (they make great gifts), consider sending a donation directly to Greyhound Support Transport and help get those retired racing hounds out of Florida.

Soon to be the boss of Beamer

“And you are?”

“I’m Annie, who are you?”

“I’m Beamer and the top dog around here.”

“Mm.”

“What do you mean Mm?”

“I was told Ice was numero uno.”

“Who told you that?”

“My new Mom.”

“Don’t you mean your foster Mom?”

“No, I mean my new Mom.”

“O.K. let me get this straight. Are you telling me

that you are moving in here permanently?”

“If all goes well, Yep, that’s what I’m telling you.”

“Mm, so you’re on a trial period, right?”

“Yes, that’s right.”

“Well, let me give you the ground rules.

I’m the only one allowed on the couch.

The bed next to Mom’s computer is mine.

The bed to the right of Mom’s bed is mine.

All current toys are mine.

The back of the CRV is mine.

Me alone curls up on the bathroom mat next

to the bath tub when Mom is taking a shower.”

“You know, you’re very territorial.”

“I was here first.”

“Yes, but I was hoping you and I could become

buddies and play together and go on walks

together, and share toys. Mom told me you

are a great dog and thought you

and I would hit it off. I really don’t want to go

back to the kennel. It felt like being in prison

and I’ve been in a sort of prison, just like you,

when I was chasing that damned thing around

the track. I really like Mom and I know she will

take good care of me, but if you don’t like me,

she’ll return me to the kennel.[Sniff Sniff]”

“OMG – don’t cry, I just can’t handle tears.”

“Well, you’re not making me feel welcome. I

just want a home where I will be loved and I

thought this was my chance. [Sniff Sniff}”

“Well, all right, I don’t want you to go back to the kennel.

You’re very cute and you smell good. Just

respect the fact that I was here first and have

seniority.”

“Does that mean you will share the toys?”

“Yes, I will share the toys.”

“Will you share the doggie beds?”

“Yes, I will share the doggie beds”

“Will you let me share the back of the

CRV occasionally?”

“Yes, I can do that.”

“Will you let me into the bathroom when

Mom is taking a shower just to check to

see where she is?”

“Yes, but forget sharing the bath mat.”

“O.K. what about the couch.”

“This is non-negotiable.”

“Mm, we’ll see.”

“GRRR – females!”
