Jett greyhound loves to roach

R & R forever

Jett greyhound here.

I have not blogged for a long time. I prefer to lay on my back with my legs up in the air catching some zzzzz’s. While some misguided folks might think we want to race, us greyhounds prefer comfort and relaxation.

Always lots of stuff happening in this household.

Calvin & Jett

Calvin & Jett

Lots of dogs have stayed here — Calvin the Beagle (he barks a lot), an English bulldog who watched TV all day, more greyhounds, and fun poodles named Harpo and Cookie. I don’t know how she managed it but Cookie slept on Karyn’s bed all night while me and Girlfriend just glared at her.

dogs can dine at Delectables

My birthday lunch

Last year on my birthday (Dec. 19) Karyn took me to lunch. Yep, we went to Delectables and the waiter brought me my own water bowl and my own lunch. Karyn said that my lunch cost more than hers. No worries, I’m worth it. We went with Donut greyhound. Then on Girlfriend greyhound’s birthday (March), she went with Donut and on Donut’s birthday (April), I went again.

Who’s birthday is next?

Life is good here. I eat a lot of grass and then vomit. Karyn is looking for a solution. My corns still bother me but I only walk on the sidewalk or grass. Karyn is my love-slave. She is always stroking me and kissing my pink belly.

As always, love you, and you too,
Jetty Spaghetti

Beading Divas to the Rescue

I’m ready for my forever home.

Chili is a happy, outgoing 2 year old who had 7 fractures in his rear leg (a racing related injury). Dr. Goodman thought they would have to amputate, but instead was able to put “Humpty Dumpty” back together again.

He has had many bumps on the road to recovery, but has come out on the upside. He also developed MSRA at one point. Chili had multiple surgeries to get him to this point.

His bill has been very expensive…more than $6,000.

Is one dog worth $6,000?

Hell yes!

This happy boy Chili behaves just like any 2 year old greyhound now and walks perfectly on his rebuilt leg. Southern Arizona Greyhound Adoption believes that every greyhound should be in a forever home and that is why Beading Divas to the Rescue chose this charity for the month of December.

Just like the dog or dogs lying on your couch or your lap — Chili deserves his forever home.

During the month of December, all bracelet fundraising benefits broken leg greyhounds.

If you don’t want to buy a bracelet or three, consider making a direct donation.

Just pet me while I lie here

Just pet me while I lie here

(written by Jett Greyhound)

Where does the time go? My new year resolution is that I write every month.

Lots of good things have been happening.

Calvin & Jett look out the window

Calvin & Jett look out the window

Sometimes different dogs stay with us. Not only do we have Saffron (an older female) and Carter (my brindle buddy) but this older beagle named Calvin has hung with us on three different occasions. He barks a lot and so loudly but when he’s not barking we are good friends. Karyn takes us all for a walk at the same time and he pulls us around.

I have met all kinds of people. Myself and some other greyhounds went to La Frontera’s United Way kick off. Most of the employees were in awe of me and because I like to get cozy wherever I am, I laid down on the carpet and people knelt down to pet me, as it should be. I also met the AZ legislator Linda Lopez. She found me amazing. I met Jeanette Mares from Ben’s Bells Project too.

Then I went to Pima Air Museum again because a dog named Jett belongs there.

There was some Hounds for the Holiday contest and one of the judges Barbara Brown said she never kissed a greyhound so we obliged. I stopped by her place of business and she kissed me. Now she can cross that off her bucket list.

Kissy with Barbara Brown

Lots of people have come by for lunch or dinner and of course, I got a lot of loving. I like the magic thing that Lizzie does to my ears. Every time she does — I have an eargasm.

Happy New Year to you and dog bless all the dogs still eating 4D meat and stuck the South Tucson dog track. We have our paws crossed that you get out of there and into a loving home like mine so very soon.

Happy Harmony

Happy Harmony

The following was penned by Cynthia David, Beading Diva.

I first met Harmony shortly after she arrived at the kennel. She came up to me in her kennel and gave me the biggest smile I have ever seen. She pulled her flews away from her teeth, chopped at the air, bobbed her head up and down, and did a happy dance. This routine always made me laugh, and she used it to get treats, meals, or to convince me it was time for a walk.

Her group of greys were all named for characters on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” I never saw the show but Harmony was a perfect name for her. Harmie was the sweetest grey I have ever met, she really had no interest in smaller creatures, her main goal in life was to be adored by humans.

Her second foster family was a young couple who lived nearby. They asked if I would take her for a long weekend when they were going out of town. I agreed and she got on famously with fellow greys, Mikey and Jan.

A couple of months later the couple asked me if I could take care of her for 2 weeks while they went to Thailand. Annie, her foster mom, said that on the drive over when she got near my house Harm became very excited, how charming is that?

The love of a greyhound

The love of a greyhound

Needless to say Harmony never went back to her foster home, her home was with me and the boys, and later, my husband Wayde. We shared our lives together for 9 years.

Harmony, Harmie, Harm-son, Harmel, Harmy Harm, Harmonium, Miss Choppy Chop (Michelle and Brian Caillet’s name for her) was a very special girl and all who knew her are saddened by her passing.

Bracelets for broken legs

Bracelets for broken legs

Beading Divas to the Rescue is proud to be raising money for Jackie’s Fund for Injured Greyhounds under the Southern Arizona Greyhound Adoption (SA Greys) banner.

Jackie’s Fund began as a way to pay for beyond the normal spay/neuter/dental/fecal/etc veterinary expenses. SA Greys has paid for 5 broken leg surgeries, 3 of these dogs within the past 2 months.

While these dogs have either been adopted or are in foster homes recuperating nicely — specialized broken leg surgeries/follow up care can cost from $2,500 to $4,000 per dog.

This is a huge expense for any breed-specific adoption group.

The goal is to keep helping these broken leg dogs from the South Tucson track so they can experience forever homes just like the hounds in your house now.

So buy bling! It’s not too early to buy holiday gifts.

Handcrafted Beading Divas bracelets are made with beautiful donated beads; one size fits most (coiled memory wire used for easy on/off); each bracelet comes with a paw charm.

All bracelets cost $20. You can order them online (add S&H) and the entire $20 goes to the charity.

You can also buy bracelets at these locally-owned Tucson stores:

–-Silver Sea Jewelry & Gifts, 330 N. 4th Avenue, 624-9954
–-Clues Unlimited Mystery Book Store, 3146 E. Fort. Lowell Road (SE corner Country Club), 326-8533 (closed Sun/Mon)
–-A K Jensen Apparel, (St. Philips Plaza), 4340 N. Campbell Ave., Suite 72, 529-2775
–-Sissy’s Pet Salon, 7350 N La Cholla Blvd (by Albertsons), 229-9898 (limited selection)
Postnet, 7049 E. Tanque Verde, 733-9700 (closed Sat/Sun-limited selection)

Please pay cash or make the check payable to Southern Arizona Greyhound Adoption.

Beading Divas will also be selling bracelets:

Sept 5 – Odyssey Storytelling – 7 pm – FLUXX Theatre (bracelets as raffle prizes!)

Sept 22 – Heirloom Farmers Market – 8 am to noon – St. Philips Plaza

Diva Annie

Diva Annie

Annie was part of the Beading Divas’ extended family.

(written by Jerry Tucker)

Annie…. crossed the Rainbow Bridge August 22nd, 2013 at 11:00 a.m.

Little Annie (the bananie) brought us great joy and taught us so much during her short 8 years with us.

She had to leave us on August 22nd after an unexpected, major surgery and kidney failure at 10 years of age.

Annie was a very special part of our family. She will never be gone from our memories. The love and good times we shared will always be in our hearts.

She came to us October 19, 2005. We met her at the kennel where she had recently arrived from the track. It was instant love with her bouncy, happy, enthusiasm. When we got her home we began to find that she had some fears probably caused by the treatment at the track.

In addition to a general caution of people, she had a fear of the dark. When night came, she would to into her kennel and not come out until daylight. After weeks of working with her, she finally would go out before going to bed for the night…but was frightened of the moon. A few more weeks and she became more trusting …but forever checked the sky when we walked.

Annie was the fastest, most beautiful runner of all our past greyhounds. She loved to run… in the house, in a fence yard—any place. Her favorite antic was to run at full speed toward me and make a quick head fake and turn from a imminent collision at the last minute passing by with a smile on her face.

Annie was also the smartest greyhound we ever had…she NEVER forgot anything or anyone. Something frightened her— never do that again. Someone not kind— avoid. Something not taste right—don’t eat that again. Something causes her pain or discomfort—avoid that situation.

Although shy, she would cautiously warm up to people and other dogs. However, her favorite “dogs friends” were greyt “brother” Mahalo (who misses her very much) and Opa (Greyt Escape).

She loved going to Greyt Escape where she was free to play with Opa, Riley and the others. Happiness, joy and enthusiasm were always in her heart.

Of course, Kathy and I… miss her greatly, but know she has joined Baxter, Bessie and Zoola in that great place where loved ones go when they leave us.

Annie was often at the Beading “bees” which are held at Greyt Escape. She was just the sweetest girl gently nudging for pets. We will miss this dark brindle beauty’s gentle presence.

Was Annie a Diva or just channeling Carol Channing?

Beloved Virginia

Beloved Virginia

Virginia was part of the Beading Divas’ extended family. She left planet earth at the ripe old age of 14 1/2

(written by Genie Galina)

The first morning after Virginia spent a terrified first night with us, I walked into the kitchen and she had accidentally put her head in a large, empty cereal container left on the counter for recycling.

She looked hysterically funny, and I think she was in shock. She was still terrified of us so she tried to get away from me, knocking into walls, until I caught up with her and removed the box.

I think that was the first time she truly looked into my eyes (and soul) and I could really see her beauty. Although she remained terrified for a while, that was the day that she and I bonded.

Virginia lived with Wolfe who went to the Rainbow Bridge. Then Wiggles came into their lives. She lived with and was loved by Genie Galina and Steve Mehlman. Black is indeed beautiful.

Anne Marie's heart girl

Anne Marie’s heart girl

Yuma is part of the Beading Divas’ extended family.

(written by Anne Marie King)

Jet black when she came into our lives, Yuma and I grayed together over the 9 years we were blessed to have her. She was a racing champion (unfortunately!) and so was raced until 5.

We already had a handsome black boy, Poseidon (our first greyhound), and were looking for a sister for him after having lost his cocker spaniel companion.

I vividly remember bringing Poseidon to the kennel to meet Yuma – such a beautiful, sweet, shy girl. It was love at first sight for all of us. I always wished Yuma could have told us about her life before we met her.

She never got over her skittishness around noise & commotion (of which we had plenty, being a household with 2 young children), although she slowly stopped being shy around us and other people. Yuma and Poseidon were fast friends and playmates until we lost Poseidon in 2007. Stuffies and squeakies were a favorite for both hounds.

Yuma was truly my “heart girl.” She was my sweet, loving, shadow-companion, always there to comfort me when she knew I needed it. She would come up to me, bow her head and rest the top of her head against my leg – and stay there as long as I needed to pet and cuddle her to feel better. I only hope she knows how very special and loved she is. I truly have never met a gentler, sweeter soul than our Yuma.

If only we humans could learn to be as accepting and loving as our furry friends – wouldn’t the world be that much nicer…

Run free, my beautiful girl – we miss you more than we can possibly express.

Jett & Donut relax

Jett & Donut relax

Written by Tucson Jett Greyhound

I went to a sleepover! Usually dogs sleep over my house but I got to go to someone’s house to sleepover. The only other time I slept over someone’s house was at Greyt Escape but there were lots of other dogs around.

You see, my human Karyn, wanted to be dog-free. I find that hard to believe that she didn’t want me and Girlfriend around as she claimed she wanted a break. She was supposed to go away but that fell through. She still figured out how to be dog-free for one night.

I know she must have missed ME very much. Girlfriend, probably not so much. I — Jett — did not miss Girlfriend.

The reason I didn’t miss Girlfriend is because I had a sleepover with my “real” girlfriend Donut and her person Judith. I just happen to live with Girlfriend, the other dog who lives with me. Pay attention. It’s not as complicated as it sounds unlike some mobile devices.

Anyway, Donut has a big backyard and we played there a lot in the early morning and sometimes I sniffed without her. Then we traded dog beds. I chewed bones. I played with toys. I like going there. Maybe I will get invited back another time? I got lots of loving. I wasn’t ignored like I am at my house.

This week was my “Gotcha Day.” I have been living with Karyn for 3 years. I came here when I was 4.5. I was the only dog at that time although some greyhounds stayed with us after their spay or neuter. Then a year later Girlfriend came along. I still pretend like I’m the only dog. Girlfriend thinks she is the alpha but she’s just the bitch.

I am looking forward to my next greyt adventure.

Love you

What you see is what you Jett

Hi Fans

It’s been like a whirlwind of activity around here. Never, and I mean never, a dull moment.

April was the Greyhound Blitz for National Adopt a Greyhound Month and we have been blitzing like crazy.

I went to the Farmers Market at the Loft Cinema and met every man, woman, child, and dog who came that day. Some guy sang a song about me — When you’re a JETT, you’re a JETT all the way from your first cigarette to your last dying day. He was funny. He wanted to take me home but my human didn’t like that idea.

The following Saturday I went to Pima Air & Space Museum. Wow! What a great place. Big. Friendly. I met so many people, some from Japan and Switzerland, and Austria plus the good old USA. I was quite popular.

Then I went to the Rainbow Remembrance. That was a sad event as people stood up and remembered the greyhounds that went to the Rainbow Bridge. My human talked about Hush Puppie, Romance, and Atomic Charm — not dogs that I ever met but dogs that never got to be a beloved pet like I am.

Then I went to a Meet & Greet at Royal Kia of Tucson and met lots of new people and kissed some babies. Maybe I should be a politician?

I guess the Blitz is over. Big sigh.

Then we had lots of dogs stay with us. We had Dylan and Christopher (available) and Piper stay here for respite fostering. Piper got adopted by a nice family who came to pick him up; they had his littermate. Saffron stays here sometimes; she’s a nice old gal. Donut is here now; she’s an alpha girl who hogs the couch. And then there’s Carter who I know my human just adores. His people go away a lot and he spends a fair amount of time with us. I don’t mind. He is Girlfriend’s body guard but in a nice way.

So there you have it. Busy. Busy. Busy. Plus I go to middle school again later in May. I can’t wait!

What you see is what you Jett…

P.S. I’m wearing Thera-Paws because I have paw problems but hopefully they are getting better. Paws crossed…so they say.
