Just pet me while I lie here

Just pet me while I lie here

(written by Jett Greyhound)

Where does the time go? My new year resolution is that I write every month.

Lots of good things have been happening.

Sometimes different dogs stay with us. Not only do we have Saffron (an older female) and Carter (my brindle buddy) but this older beagle named Calvin has hung with us on three different occasions. He barks a lot and so loudly but when he’s not barking we are good friends. Karyn takes us all for a walk at the same time and he pulls us around.

I have met all kinds of people. Myself and some other greyhounds went to La Frontera’s United Way kick off. Most of the employees were in awe of me and because I like to get cozy wherever I am, I laid down on the carpet and people knelt down to pet me, as it should be. I also met the AZ legislator Linda Lopez. She found me amazing. I met Jeanette Mares from Ben’s Bells Project too.

Then I went to Pima Air Museum again because a dog named Jett belongs there.

There was some Hounds for the Holiday contest and one of the judges Barbara Brown said she never kissed a greyhound so we obliged. I stopped by her place of business and she kissed me. Now she can cross that off her bucket list.

Lots of people have come by for lunch or dinner and of course, I got a lot of loving. I like the magic thing that Lizzie does to my ears. Every time she does — I have an eargasm.

Happy New Year to you and dog bless all the dogs still eating 4D meat and stuck the South Tucson dog track. We have our paws crossed that you get out of there and into a loving home like mine so very soon.

Elvis: Love me tender

Elvis says: Love me tender

In November a local vet got a call from a social worker. One of her clients was living in a homeless camp and her dog had a litter of 9 puppies. The social worker was afraid that if she didn’t help to find homes for the puppies there would soon be 11 dogs in the camp, including the mother and father of the pups. The vet contacted SAFE animal rescue and the owner of the mother dog agreed to give up 4 of the puppies. Elvis, Smokey, Jackson, and Tico have been given their first puppy boosters and neutered, and will be available for adoption this weekend so they can celebrate Christmas in their forever homes.

There is still time to buy bracelets for Christmas or how about some blingy bling for New Years Eve? Bracelets cost $20 and the entire amount goes directly to the dogs and cats of SAFE – Saving Animals from Euthanasia.

Happy Harmony

Happy Harmony

The following was penned by Cynthia David, Beading Diva.

I first met Harmony shortly after she arrived at the kennel. She came up to me in her kennel and gave me the biggest smile I have ever seen. She pulled her flews away from her teeth, chopped at the air, bobbed her head up and down, and did a happy dance. This routine always made me laugh, and she used it to get treats, meals, or to convince me it was time for a walk.

Her group of greys were all named for characters on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” I never saw the show but Harmony was a perfect name for her. Harmie was the sweetest grey I have ever met, she really had no interest in smaller creatures, her main goal in life was to be adored by humans.

Her second foster family was a young couple who lived nearby. They asked if I would take her for a long weekend when they were going out of town. I agreed and she got on famously with fellow greys, Mikey and Jan.

A couple of months later the couple asked me if I could take care of her for 2 weeks while they went to Thailand. Annie, her foster mom, said that on the drive over when she got near my house Harm became very excited, how charming is that?

Needless to say Harmony never went back to her foster home, her home was with me and the boys, and later, my husband Wayde. We shared our lives together for 9 years.

Harmony, Harmie, Harm-son, Harmel, Harmy Harm, Harmonium, Miss Choppy Chop (Michelle and Brian Caillet’s name for her) was a very special girl and all who knew her are saddened by her passing.

Maggie is a special dog for a special person

Maggie is a special dog for a special person

For the month of December 2013, Beading Divas to the Rescue is raising money for SAFE (Saving Animals from Euthanasia.) SAFE is a non-profit “No-Kill” organization (501(c)(3)), providing service to Tucson, Arizona and surrounding communities. One of the most important things that SAFE does is to rescue animals for soldiers from Ft. Huachuca. Because of the soldier’s commitment to deploy to Iraq and Afghanistan, they are forced to give up their pets. In many cases the animals are delivered to a shelter and there are way too many for the shelters to care for and keep. If the animals are not re-homed, within a few days they are killed.

Maggie (pictured) is a special little girl who needs a special home. She comes with medical issues, but that doesn’t affect her disposition. At just 11 lbs, she is a sweet little “Velcro” dog who loves to sit in your lap or lay at your feet. She is very affectionate and loves to cuddle with her human. Although only 2 years old, she has a calm demeanor and would fit in well in a home without young children. She learned to go out the doggie door and has never had an “accident” in her foster home.

As for her medical issues: Her pelvic bone is broken in 3 places and it has healed that way. The vet said that surgery could make it worse. The only outward sign of her injury is that she doesn’t jump up on furniture very often. It’s unknown what happened to Maggie; however, the jolt was strong enough to also disengage her uterus.

You can meet Maggie on Saturday, Dec. 7 at PETCO (Broadway/Craycroft) starting at 11 am. (Tucson)

Maggie and others like Maggie and dogs and cats without special needs are what rescue organizations do.
