Bracelets for a cause

Check out this beautiful batch of original bracelets. So many bracelets for $20 (+ $3 S&H), so little time … until end of Feb.

A message from the Greyhound Support Transport board of directors

Something that should maybe be talked about is what we were able to do at the seasonal closure of Mardi Gras last year. When the season closed, after the first load of adoption dogs left, there were approximately 20 or so dogs that were yet to be placed. A kennel was donated a to use, the track waived the rent, the Mardi Gras greyhound foundation paid the electric and water, the kennel owners provided the food, wormer and shank bones. While, Monica, Myself and Jennifer Arno split up the kennel work. Within 6 weeks all the retirees had been placed into an adoption program. And all of them are long since adopted and in homes now. It was a really fantastic thing that we were able to do. We are very proud of that, because the tracks down here heavily sponsor another program, and that group didn’t lift a finger to help with the closure. GST, with a small operating budget, got the job done and made sure there was no dog left behind.

Congratulations to Greyhound Support Transport — they are the lucky winners of the Bead Drive Contest drawing held last month.

During the month of February, all bracelets sales will be given to them. It’s a short month so you better start buying.

During Greyhound Support Transport’s first year –2009 — their goal was to place 200 dogs. They surpassed that with 250.

In 2010 their goal was to place 250 dogs. They placed nearly 400. And because they were able to place so many, a lot of those dogs were from farms and other racetracks in Florida not just in Miami.

The majority of dogs went out West to Oregon and Colorado to Greyhound Pet Adoptions Northwest, Homes 4 Hounds, and Oregon Greyhound Adoption; all three are located in Oregon. In Washington state dogs go to Greyhound Pets Inc and in Colorado, Almost Home for Hounds.

On the East coast, dogs go to Forever Home Greyhound Adoptions, Greyhound Friends of New Jersey, Fast Friends, and many others, although in small numbers, as that’s where the majority of other Florida retired racers go. Bay Area Greyhound Adoptions in Tampa also homes alot of dogs for GST.

As we go through the month, you’ll learn more about Greyhound Support Transport. Not an adoption group, they haul retired racing greyhounds out of Florida to non-racing states and Canada.

Please consider buying a bracelet or three as gifts to help the dogs get to be couch potatoes that much faster.

In Tucson, bracelets can be purchased at Silver Sea Jewelry & Gifts, 330 N. 4th Ave., or Dirty Dawgs dog wash, 2510 N. Campbell Ave.

Harmony greyhound enjoys retirement

Harmony, a 9-year-young ex-racer, knows how to make herself comfortable.

She raced for about two years in Colorado and ended up in Tucson, perhaps traveling with an organization like Greyhound Support Transport.

Harmie has lived with Cynthia, one of the Beading Divas, for six years and enjoys visiting with the beaders when they gather at her house. She has a 100-watt unforgettable smile and loves retirement life. In her spare time or when nobody is paying much attention, she shreds toilet paper rolls for merriment sake.

(written by Diva Cynthia)

For the month of April, all bracelet proceeds will be donated to Greyhound Support Transport of Florida. This non-profit organization works hard to move Florida’s excess of retired racing dogs to adoption groups in non-racing states.

Buy bracelets online via Lizzie Stardust on Etsy.com or at Silver Sea Jewelry & Gifts in Tucson located at 330 N. 4th Avenue, 520-624-9954.

Bracelets for Helping Hounds

Since April is Adopt-a-Greyhound month, it’s fitting that the Beading Divas to the Rescue sell bracelets for Greyhound Support Transport.

Greyhound Support Transport is located in Florida where there are still 13 dog tracks operating. This group hauls retired racing greyhounds to non racing states and Canada, so the dogs can be placed into adoption groups in states without race tracks, where the supply does not override the demand.

Greyhound Support Transport’s most recent haul was to Oregon. 36 dogs  are on their way to finding a new life, a second chance. The cost of this haul was $5,250.00.

Greyhound Support Transport has an ambitious schedule. They want to haul dogs to non racing states every six weeks. Their next haul will be to the East Coast.

For Sale: Coiled bracelets are one-of-a-kind, handmade from donated beads. One size fits most. Bracelets cost $20 – all this goes directly to GST. If you buy a bracelet online at Lizzie Stardust / Etsy.com, please add $3 for shipping & handling/US, or $4 Canada/elsewhere.

If you’re local to Tucson, come by Silver Sea Jewelry & Gifts, 330 N. 4th Ave. (520-624-9954) or Desert Rose Homeopathic Pharmacy (smaller selection) 2550 E. Ft. Lowell Road. (520-918-0100)

If you are not into bracelets (they make great gifts), consider sending a donation directly to Greyhound Support Transport and help get those retired racing hounds out of Florida.
