Beading Divas to the Rescue

abandoned fat cat

It was the middle of Tucson’s sweltering hot summer when one of PACC’s Animal Care Officers went to rescue JoJo, who weighed a whopping 29 pounds, from outside an apartment complex where he had been abandoned.

The obese cat was lethargic, panting and in obvious distress.

The officer brought JoJo back to PACC and right into the ICU. The donations from the Friends of PACC meant that one of the shelter’s veterinarians, Dr. Sarah Rios, could immediately give the overheated feline emergency care. She and her technicians worked to administer IV fluids, give him a cooling shave, and provide watchful, supportive care for several days while JoJo regained his health.

Thanks for saving me!

After JoJo health was stable, he went into foster care. He regained strength, lost weight and soon found a loving family.

WISHLIST
Monetary donations to the Friends of PACC will be used where the shelter’s pets need them the most. If you wish to make an in-kind gift of supplies to help the pets of Pima Animal Care Center, we suggest you look at the shelter’s Amazon Wish List: . Shelter staffers update the list weekly to reflect the pets’ most pressing needs, and your donations will be shipped right to the shelter’s doors.

Friends of PACC helped Honey

Honey is calm

Because of FRIENDS OF PACC, a special fund through the Community Foundation of Southern Arizona, some dogs at PACC are able to calm down from kennel stress by receiving an anti-anxiety aid that is not funded by PACC. Here is one dog’s story:

Helping PACC Dogs Cope with Shelter Stress
By Karen Hollish, director, Friends of PACC

Soon after she started working for Pima Animal Care Center this summer, Dr. Karyn Carlson came to us with an urgent request. She’d noticed many dogs who were exceptionally stressed in PACC’s old and overcrowded shelter, and she suspected that Trazodone, a gentle anti-anxiety aid that she’d prescribed to dogs in other settings, could help many of them cope.

With support from friends like you, we were able to grant PACC a 3-month supply of the medication, which the county cannot currently buy. Dr. Carlson tells us the gift is helping the shelter save the lives of dozens of dogs who are showing signs of shelter stress like self-injury, attempted biting and storm anxiety.

Friends of PACC

high anxiety Honey

One such dog is Honey, a young greyhound / pit bull mix whose first family surrendered her to PACC due to their allergies. When we first met Honey, she was cowering in the back of her kennel. Her adoptability seemed low, but after Dr. Carlson put her on a Trazodone regimen, Honey began to come out of her shell.

Honey eventually caught the attention of Linda B., an Oro Valley resident who took Honey home. On her first night home, Linda gave Honey one calming Trazodone dose to help her settle in.

After that, Linda said, Honey didn’t need the medication, as she adjusted perfectly to life outside of the shelter — just as our doctors had predicted.

“Thank you so much,” Linda said. “I really love this animal.”

Today Dr. Carlson said the Medical Team is working with PACC volunteers to identify other dogs who might need a little help weathering shelter stress.

“The Trazodone pilot is going great,” Dr. Carlson tells us. “Our dogs seem to be responding very well to it, and we have several long-termers on it.”

Beading Divas to the Rescue

No animals are turned away

For the month of December, Beading Divas to Rescue is thrilled to be fundraising for Friends of Pima Animal Care Center (PACC).

The Friends of Pima Animal Care Center is a project fund held at the Community Foundation for Southern Arizona. It exists solely to support the work done at the only shelter in Pima County that never turns away a pet in need.

There are many challenges that come with being Pima County’s only open-admission shelter. On an annual basis, PACC cares for more than 20,000 animals, including many who arrive ill, injured or abused. The shelter routinely reaches overflow conditions, and even with a much-needed new shelter approved by voters in November 2014, the needs often outstrip available resources – which is where community support makes a huge difference.

The Friends of PACC fills critical resource shortages that the county can’t fill.

Recent investments include the purchase of a dental x-ray machine, so that PACC’s vets can save the lives of senior pets and pets who suffered oral trauma; the purchase of long-acting pain medications, so that cats who undergo major surgeries recover in the most comfortable way; and the purchase of the most effective compounding de-wormer, so that all baby animals surrendered to PACC have the best chance of staying healthy and finding a forever home.

Stay tuned as we will be sharing stories for how Friends of PACC are helping the animals.

In the arms of angels

Adopt me!

More about In the Arms of Angels and what a wonderful rescue they are Star light, star bright. Which star will I adopt tonight?

In the Arms of Angels

Mira star

In the Arms of Angels

Adopt me: Polaris

The six scared stars were rescued from a local shelter. These six little stars were at risk of euthanasia for being timid and under-socialized. The stars were divided into three different foster homes to make socializing them easier. The stars were came down with kennel cough and during the course of antibiotic treatments the stars began to shine. They are now happy, healthy, and looking for their forever homes. The stars are just under six months old. (top left: Sirius)

Here is Antares dog star – he looks like a Bengal tiger and gets along with other dogs.

Mira is a gentle girl and has great house manners although she aspires to be a couch potato as she longs to be up on the couch. Perhaps she’s your next lap dog?

Polaris (Polly) prefers laying down and chewing on bones rather than running around with toys, although does enjoy the occasional romp. She often needs guidance from her people before being introduced to new things and people, but quickly becomes comfortable in new settings. She absolutely loves and adores her humans

Rigel, or as his foster moms call him “Mr. Wiggles,” is a happy little guy full of enthusiasim. He loves to play, with other dogs and toys although he may get possessive of his toys around other dogs. He is a little mischievous and always finds a way to entertain himself, whether it’s with a rock or your shoes!

You can find out about all the STARS at In the Arms of Angels and you can help support their efforts by making a direct donation or buying some bracelets.

Bridge Rescue for Dogs Tucson

Lilly says: Adopt me!

Foster-based Tucson Bridge Rescue for Dogs has some amazing rescue stories. Here’s one of them:

Lilly, at approximately 4 years old, was found on the streets and taken to PACC where she was diagnosed with not only heartworm but ringworm as well.

Her physical condition suggests she was used as a breeder dog and then dumped on the streets when someone decided they no longer needed her.

This sweet girl was given only 24 hours to be rescued because PACC cannot maintain ringworm dogs for long due to ringworm’s propensity to spread in the shelter environment. Both her heartworm and ringworm conditions have been fully treated, and she is now ready for her forever family.

Had her foster mom not stepped up, she would have been put down at the shelter, and we would have never had the opportunity to discover what a happy girl she is and how she loves everyone – dogs, kids, cats, you name it.

She would love to have a lap to call her own. Lilly is crate-trained, house-trained, vaccinated, spayed, microchipped, and ready to go to a home that will spoil her rotten.

Bridge Rescue for Dogs Tucson

Bridge saved Simon’s life

Beading Divas to the Rescue is excited to be fundraising for Bridge Rescue for Dogs during the month of September.

Simon was found as a stray with a carabiner hook impaled into his chest and dragging a chain through the hook. No one claimed responsibility for his injuries, and he languished at Pima Animal Care Center (PACC) for weeks as he recovered physically and began the emotional healing process after the torture he endured.

PACC staff contacted BRDG because they knew that Simon would not fare well long-term in the stressful, noisy and scary shelter setting. BRDG was up to the task and not only found the perfect family to adopt Simon, but also raised funds to enroll him in a 30-day Board and Train program through sol.DOG Services at a cost of $1,500.

Simon flourished in his training program. After graduation, he moved to his forever home with a fabulous adoptive family who loves him. While we will never be able to make up for the atrocious act he endured, Bridge Rescue is proud to have played a part in his successful recovery and are so very grateful to the donations that made his happy ending possible.

Hope Animal Shelter Tucson

HOPE saved me!

Mr. Fantastic came to HOPE Animal Shelter from PACC, where he had been taken as a stray. HOPE takes in many senior and special needs animals from PACC, and they knew that Mr. Fantastic definitely was in need of the care HOPE can offer.

About 10 years old, he came with an injured eye, cleft palate, and heart murmur. Mr. Fantastic immediately went to the vet to get started on whatever medical treatments he needed.

Today Mr. Fantastic, now known as Luke, is doing well and is in a very loving home. A wonderful family wanted to adopt two special needs seniors; they also adopted another special girl from HOPE named Lola.
HOPE is so grateful when a homeless senior with health issues becomes a cherished family member.

Like every charity, along with monetary donations, HOPE needs supplies for cats and dogs, cleaning and office supplies. Check out their wishlist and just maybe you can help them out.

And then there are the Beading Divas to the Rescue’s fabulous bracelets online to help fund-raise for HOPE.

Hope Animal Shelter Tucson

HOPE saved my life

For the month of August, Beading Divas to the Rescue is pleased to be raising funds for Hope Animal Shelter here in Tucson.

Here’s one instance how HOPE went above and beyond the call of duty:

Emma
Emma was originally adopted from the Humane Society of Southern Arizona. Her adoptive family took her in for a vet check, when it was discovered that Emma had numerous pellets in her body. She had been shot multiple times before she ended up in a shelter.

The family did not want a cat with potential health issues and left her at the vets office.

HOPE stepped in and took in this gentle girl. Emma never found her forever home, but lived the rest of her life at HOPE getting lots of love and care. Later in her life she developed health issues that were too much for her to cope with. When she passed away, she was surrounded by loving people who cared deeply for her.

Today, August 1, HOPE is moving to their new location in Marana. Change is good for the soul and HOPE.

Our online ETSY store has a great selection or you can find a bracelet to fall in love with at the following Tucson venues:
