The Arizona Animal Fair was a good day for greyhound vet bill fundraising.

We raised a whopping $561.00!

The bracelets glistened in the sun like a dazzling beacon singing – Come Buy Me!  They drew women in like a dark chocolate factory.

We lost track of the number of bracelets sold as there were many donations too.

People said they read about Lizzie’s story and the greyhound accident in the newspaper.

Thank you to Greyt Escape and Desert Dog News for allowing us to participate under your banner. It was a hot day, but well worth it.

Paws 4 a Cause was collecting money too.

Our next beading bee is March 8 and we’ll get another accounting and will post  an update at the time. I’m sure we’re getting near the fini$h line.

There are more bracelets for sale at Silver Sea Jewelry & Gifts, 330 N. 4th Avenue, 624-9954 and online at Etsy.com (scroll to page 2 and 3).

What do beads have to do with Tucson greyhounds?

Well, adopted greyhounds Opal and Rider suffered $14,000 worth of life-saving vet bills after a hit-and-run accident, and some fellow greyhound adopters and friends of Elizabeth (Lizzie) Mead are making one-of-a-kind beaded bracelets to raise funds to pay off the vet bill.

So far we have sold over 50 bracelets ($20/each) made from donated beads.

We know you’re out there with some unused beads tucked away in your drawers and closets.   It’s the cusp of the Tucson Gem Show and as you buy new baubles and beads, please consider filtering some of your old beads in our direction. Our bead coffers are getting low. We also accept memory wire for bracelets and animal fobs.

View bracelets for sale online.

Contact karynzoldan@yahoo.com to arrange pick up (in Tucson area).

You can read more about the hit-and-run accident here.

Read three news articles written about the accident.

Here’s an article in the in the Arizona Daily Star about Lizzie Mead’s greyhounds that sustained $14,000 in vet bills after her devastating accident on October 20.

If you want to buy a one-of-a-kind beaded bracelet made with all donated beads and labor, here’s the info:

Local to Tucson – Silver Sea Jewelry & Gifts, 330 N. 4th Avenue, 624-9954

Online – Etsy/Greytescape – Michelle is graciously absorbing the Etsy/Paypal fees so all funds go directly to Lizzie’s vet bills.

Back in Tucson – the third Saturday of the month (January 17-Pet Day) at the Spanish Trail Farmers Market – Look for the Greyt Escape table!

You can read more about the accident and view photos of the trashed car and what a miracle that Opal and Rider are still alive.

Pick up the Jan/Feb issue of the Desert Dog News (Tucson’s only pet newspaper).

There’s an article and photo on page 6/7 about Lizzie and her greyhounds, Opal & Rider.

I found my free copy at OK Feed & Supply. (The article is now online.)

Coming in 2009, a list of people to thank for their kindnesses in helping to get the word out about the greyhound accident, one-of-a-kind beaded bracelets with photos and links where to buy them, and a raffle for a beautiful handmade quilt.

For now you can purchase the bracelets at Silver Sea Jewelry & Gifts, 330 N. 4th Ave., 624-9954. All beads and labor have been donated.
