Hi fans. I went to middle school in December and met with the most amazing class ever. These 6th graders were super bright. They asked my Karyn all the right questions about dog racing. If these kids governed the world, there would be no dog racing and no animal cruelty.

While visiting the school I was still limping. I have some debris deep inside my paw pad. It’s a big OWIE. We have been to my lovely veterinarian and even to that fancy specialty place and so far no solution except to amputate my toe. Cha-ching! Those are my Karyn’s sound effects.

The students all wrote me notes too. I will share some:

Jett, I hope you never have to go through that racing again and get better!

Dear Jett, you are the cutest dog ever!!!

I hope your paw heels (sic) and your life has many adventures ahead.

Dear Jett, I know that you can’t read but I hope that you live long and live happy with your owner. You are a really nice and cute dog!

There are more but I don’t need to share all of them. Sharing is not my favorite activity.

I have been to this school many times and the kids remember my name. Today I went in an elevator. It was an elevating experience.

Life has been hectic at my house because there never seems to be any down time for my Karyn. She is always on the go. We had Saffron stay with us. Saffron’s person and Karyn are friends and Saffron stays here a lot. She is an old gal but kind of fits right in. As you can see in this photo below she is making herself cozy. We thrive on cozy.

Then some black and white dog stayed here for one day. He was a nice dude. And now some black dog with tuxedo markings have been staying here. I don’t know his story but he’s a bit grabby when it comes to treats. Girlfriend barely tolerates him.

So there you have it. I hope to get to the computer more often but Karyn hogs the keyboard. Hey hounds, are any of you missing a toe (or a digit as the specialist guy said) and if so, what is life without a toe?

For December 2012, Beading Divas to the Rescue is proud to support:

Going Home, a project of the Greyhound Protection League.

Going Home means that when the greyhounds stop racing, they have the opportunity to safely leave Tucson Greyhound Park and go to suitable adoption groups.

Kisses for the hounds

Greyhound Protection League covers the costs for safe transport as well as veterinary services when required, flea & tick products, and food until the dogs reach adoption groups. Dozens of lucky greyhounds are on their way home but many more are waiting…

Kennel operators or dog owners who want Going Home to help pet out Tucson dogs, contact GPL/Going Home.

Bracelets are one-of-a-kind made with donated beads. Bracelets coil around for easy on/off; one size fits most. Bracelets cost $20 and the entire amount is donated to the charity. Bracelets can be paid for with cash or a check made payable to Greyhound Protection League.

In Tucson you can buy bracelets at:
–Silver Sea Jewelry & Gifts, 330 N. 4th Avenue, 624-9954
–Clues Unlimited Mystery Book Store, 3146 E. Fort. Lowell Road (SE corner Country Club), 326-8533 (closed Sun/Mon)
-A K Jensen Apparel, (St. Philips Plaza), 4280 N. Campbell Ave., Suite 212, 529-2775

You can also order bracelets online using our Etsy store (Lizzie Stardust). If you order online, add $5.50 for S&H. International orders, add $7.50. Orders are usually shipped within 2 to 3 days.

Bracelets will be for sale at the 4th Avenue Fair in Tucson on December 7, 8, and 9. Look for the booth directly across from Silver Sea Jewelry.

Meet Wings - a Tucson greyhound

Meet Wings – a Tucson greyhound

This month Beading Divas to the Rescue is proud to sell bracelets to benefit Southern Arizona Greyhound Adoption (aka SA Greys). This group is an all-volunteer, 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to finding loving forever homes for greyhounds throughout Tucson, Southern Arizona, and Southern New Mexico.

As with every breed specific adoption group, every dollar has meaning and purpose. For instance, here’s an idea how much it costs to transition ONE retired racing greyhound for ONE month.

$100 – checkup & fecal test
$4 probiotics for one dog for a week
$22 dewormer (Panacur)
$5.10 Heartgard Plus (per dog after negative SNAP test)
$6 Bordatella shot (to prevent kennel cough)
$11 Frontline Plus (per dog per month)
$192 Kennel per dog per month (includes dry dog food)

$340.10 plus…

$260 for spay or neuter, dental, SNAP test, microchip, baseline blood work and any shots due

$600.10 per dog per month

Yet, the cost to adopt a greyhound is $250. Why $250? It’s what the local market will bear.

Do the math! For every retired racing greyhound, Southern Arizona Greyhound Adoption must raise an additional $350 in order to break even.

Is it worth it? Of course! Giving a chance to a retired racing greyhound to enjoy being a cherished family pet is priceless.

That’s why this Tucson greyhound adoption group needs your help.

In Tucson you can buy one-of-a-kind coil beaded bracelets for $20 at these locations:

–Silver Sea Jewelry & Gifts, 330 N. 4th Avenue, 624-9954
–Clues Unlimited Mystery Book Store, 3146 E. Fort. Lowell Road (SE corner Country Club), 326-8533 (closed Sun/Mon)
–Sissy’s Pet Grooming Salon, 7350 N. La Cholla Blvd (in Albertsons Shopping Center), 229-9898
-A K Jensen Apparel, (St. Philips Plaza), 4280 N. Campbell Ave., Suite 212, 529-2775

The above locations accept cash or make a check payable to Southern Arizona Greyhound Adoption.

Or if you are not local, consider buying them from our secure online store (add $5.50 S&H).

If you don’t want any dazzling eye candy for your wrist, consider making a donation directly to the group perhaps volunteering.

Tucson greyhound Jett goes to City Council meeting

written by Jett Greyhound

The other day I went to this big tall building downtown. I met lots of people. When I stick my needle nose face into their face, they are a bit surprised, laugh, and pet me.

KOLD Channel 13 reporter Bud Foster and I became the best of friends. We were nose to nose. He couldn’t keep his hands off me.

Anyway my human is all over the place with this dog racing steroids thing and sometimes she takes me along.

The City Council was interesting and there was another greyhound — Dilly. She is a masculine female. She was strong and had a beautiful Roman nose. I have a demi-Roman nose. While Dilly was very alert, I relaxed and laid down on the carpet and just listened to the people talking.

Then I was on TV and in the newspaper. We walked our neighborhood and some lady comes running out of her house and said, “Hey, is that the dog in the newspaper today?”

Yep, that would be me.

Do you want my pawtograph?

Love ya. Remember, what you see is what you Jett.

P.S. Yesterday was Girlfriend’s 1st Gotcha Day. Girlfriend is the other greyhound who lives here. She is not my “girlfriend.” Donut is my real girlfriend. Karyn forgot to celebrate. But on another note, GF’s corns are all gone. Now Karyn said we must have a double celebration. Girlfriend is no longer a Corn Dog.

Done racing, enjoying life

We’re going around the final stretch for Arizona Greyhound Rescue.  During the month of October, all the sales of Beading Divas bracelets benefit AGR.

AZ Greyhound Rescue is located in Marana and serves all of Pima County and south east Arizona as well as Pinal County and parts of Maricopa County.

AGR gets retired racing greyhounds from the dog track in South Tucson as well as other greyhounds who have raced in Arkansas, Florida, Texas, and Tijuana, Mexico and from breeding farms all over the country. AGR also occasionally takes in greyhound mixes from PACC and other rescues throughout the state.

If you don’t want a bracelet, maybe you want to sponsor a dog? You can also get involved by providing foster care or volunteering at the kennel or a meet-and-greet. There are lots of ways to help out and it’s good for your psyche and soul.

Follow this link for where to buy bracelets in Tucson and online. Bracelets cost $20 and every penny of it goes directly to AGR. For online bracelets, add $4 S&H.

Tucson Greyhound: Jett’s Gotcha Day 2011/08/14

The following is written by Jett Greyhound, the Jett-setter

Friday – August 12 – was my “gotcha” day.  I’m not sure what that means but my human Karyn seemed all excited about it when she picked me up at The Greyt Escape. I didn’t get any presents or  special treats though. She kept saying happy happy “gotcha, gotcha, gotcha.”

I have been living in this crazy household for one year and it sure beats a crate at the dog track.

I can sleep all day and I get to eat really good food and treats.

My human loves on me and this house is my bed.  I sleep on the dog beds, the human bed, the sofa, and the bed on the patio.  It’s all mine but sometimes I share.

Not only do I get two-legged visitors but lots of four-legged visitors.

My favorite four-legged visitor is Donut. She is sweet. We love on each other and sometimes she lays on my dog bed while I’m on it too!  I like Donut so much that sometimes she lays on the human bed with Karyn and there’s no space for me. That’s okay as I lay nearby. I am a gentleman.

Freckled Friends - Jett & Donut

Donut and her human and me and my human take long walks and hang out. Donut is sweet. Once she visited for four days without her human and life was just about perfect.

Another friend is Carter.  He came last year before he got adopted and he was a cool dude.  Then he got lost and my human was out of her mind looking for him. (She didn’t lose him.)   Then he got found and came to visit with his human. It was good to see him.  Then he just came again for 12 days to stay with us. We are good buddies. My human loves Carter very much. He loves to play with my toys and so I let him.

Tucson greyhound

Cozy Carter

A few weeks ago this all white dude named Petey stayed here. He was just off the dog track and being neutered. He’s all white with some freckles. We love freckles. Petey was fun. My human fell in love with Petey or so she said. I heard he got adopted by a nice family and that makes me happy.

Tucson greyhound

Go Petey!

Then there is Saffron. Her human and my human are friends too. Saffron is a bit of an older woman but very kind. I went to visit her at her new house which is closer to mine so I’m sure we will become better pals.

Tucson greyhound

Seductive Saffron

One day I went to visit someone who had an older greyhound named Harmony (she flirted with me) and a small dog Mimzy who was the boss of us all.  And on two separate occasions other dogs stayed a short while – Torque who marked everything and  Daisy who growled at me.

So as you can see I am a popular boy dog and have friends too.

Life is good. I hope that every greyhound dog has the chance to live a wonderful life like me.  And happy “gotcha” to you too.

Jett lounging at Greyt Escape

Hey world and Tucson – posted by Jett Greyhound

Life is greyt here.

Unlike the previous greyhound who lived here, the Drama Queen, I don’t chew stuff. Instead I just move things around especially things that smell like my person Karyn.  She calls me The Decorator.

So much has happened since I blogged last time. I am supposedly exuberant…whatever that means.

One day Karyn took me to this cool place where I met a lot of greyhounds. Then another day she took me again but left without me. At first I didn’t like that but I liked the dogs and Michelle and felt right at home at Greyt Escape. I even got to counter surf some cheese and bark at the javelina from afar. Man, they are ugly. When Karyn came back for me, I did the happy dance.

Another day Karyn came to give me a big hug and put her arms around me and started crying. I thought maybe she hurt that hole in her heart. She rocked me gently and said, “Baby boy, I am so very sorry that you raced 150 times.  Let the good times roll. I’m going to spoil you rotten.”  I can hardly wait!

I’ve been meeting lots of people. There’s an endless parade of people who come to visit us.

Now I am doing clicker training. She clicks this thing and I come and then I get a treat. What’s not to like?

Here’s a little secret. I am the perfect height to put my head on the dining room table. People who don’t have dogs won’t like this story.  Anyway one day Karyn was starting to eat a Chipotle bowl but got up to get a drink. When she turned around I had stuck my entire face in the bowl. She yelled, “LEAVE IT!”  I backed away from the table but there were incriminating lettuce strands sticking out of my mouth. I was this close to getting some of that chicken.

Fortunately, my lovely person Karyn laughed.  Ha ha ha. She has the best sense of humor.

By for now.

What you see is what your JETT.

Alysse & Beamer at La Encantada - Tucson

Written by Diva Glenda (Roja) Taylor

Valentine’s Day commemorates ‘love’- what a great opportunity for greyhound adopters and volunteers with Arizona Greyhound Rescue (AGR) to showcase ‘greyhound love.’

Six greyhound adopters with their fur companions – all wearing something red, did an informal meet and greet at La Encantada on Saturday, February 13, 2010: Marlene Fischer, Cynthia David, Karyn Zoldan, Diana Hansen, Loren Dawn and Glenda Taylor. We were pleased to introduce Tyme, a recent addition to the Greyt Hacienda from the Phoenix track, to the Tucson community.

Marlene picked up Tyme from the kennel on Friday for a sleep over. She gave Tyme a sponge bath, brushed his coat, and he was ready to meet the public the following day. He looked fabulous. Marlene has a cat and a Pomeranian and Tyme was a perfect gentleman. This dog is certainly small dog and cat friendly and very affectionate. He was a huge hit with shoppers and definitely loved the attention.

We passed out loads of valentine cards to shoppers with labels on the back giving the AGR  website as we chatted about what wonderful companions greyhound make, the closure of the Phoenix track, and the need for help to handle the influx of dogs we expect this year due to the track closure. We met several people that already had a greyhound and just love the breed. Marlene is a natural marketer. She is outgoing and friendly, has a gorgeous smile and was constantly surrounded by people who wanted to pet the dogs. As the shoppers were petting, Marlene was selling foster, adopt or donate. Way to go Marlene!
