Students learn about greyhounds

Students learn about greyhounds

Jett Greyhound here. I went to school again on Friday. I go to middle school. I have been many times already so when I come on the grounds, the kids run up to me and say, ‘’HI JETT.’’ I was born to be famous and not from racing around some darn track either.

7th graders meet Jett greyhound

This time we met with 7th and 8th graders. I don’t do stairs so they had to find a vacant room for us and this time we met in the gym. Karyn talks a bit about animal cruelty/greyhound racing and greyhound adoption and then all the kids ask questions and can have their pictures taken with me.

After Karyn finishes talking and they ask her questions, she said, “Pretend you’re 23 years old today. It’s Friday night. Raise your hand if you’re going to the track tonight to bet on the dogs.” Nobody raises their hand. Mission accomplished.

I love those kids and they love me.

Since we were in the gym, these boys wanted to race me. Can you imagine? I left them in the dust each time. Nobody could keep up with me. We ran back and forth, over and over. I was tired but I still ran. It was so much fun.

After the first class, I was so pooped that I laid down on my bed but I rose to the occasion and ran with the next class. As pooped as I was, I still beat them. They were hooting and hollering and cheering me on.

It was a glorious day and I made so many new friends.

I am so popular – in fact – that I go back again to do the 6th grade in a few weeks and we are maybe invited to another school to meet with first graders.

No matter where you are, remember WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU JETT

Jett greyhound goes to school

Jett Greyhound here…

Life is good. I went to middle school last week. One teacher we know teaches a class on kindness to dogs, dog racing, and adopting a greyhound. The teacher Ms. V. also showed the classes two youtube videos. I have good experience and I am the star of the show.

As part of the lesson, the kids have to ask thoughtful questions about dog racing and about greyhounds. Some of the questions were:

“Why does the government allow animal cruelty?”

“Does Jett have many friends?” (Yes – Donut, Saffron, Anabel, Carter, Opa, Riley)

“How often does Jett get a bath?”

“How fast do greyhounds run?”

My human Karyn talks to the class and as she does I wander around the room licking the kids or rest on my bed. These kids were the best. This time I saw something in the corner that I was curious about. There was a dog that looked just like me looking at me but I couldn’t find him.

Karyn told the class that I only get 2 or 3 baths a year and generally don’t have the dog smell that other breeds do but that my feet smell like Fritos. So of course all the kids wanted to smell the bottom of my paws. They also spent a lot of time looking at my tattoos.

The kids then wrote notes to me and Karyn read them to me when we came home. Here are some of the notes:

“Jett, you are big and awesome.”

“Jett, I will never go to a race track.”

“Jett, I am glad that you are safe.”

“Thank you for bringing that cute Jett.”

“When I grow up, I’m going to get a cute dog like Jett.”

So there you have it. I can tell you I was pooped but am always happy to go and help the class learn about greyhounds.

I’m a good boy. Remember…What you see, is what you Jett

Jett Greyhound

Is this how the Bee Gee's got started?

Written by Tucson greyhound Jett

Hey hound dogs and your love slaves…

Today is my birthday. Well, Happy Birthday to me! We’re gonna have a party, party.

I guess not. Those lyrics don’t apply to me.

Anyway I am to be 6 years young on December 19, 2011. Whoopeee! SIX!

I am one lucky dog or so my human Karyn reminds me. I am lucky because I survived greyhound racing. Unlike some of my would be friends and ancestors who break their legs and hocks, who are electrocuted, who have heart failure, who collide and tumble on the ground, and who are put to sleep which means they don’t wake up ever — yes, I am one lucky dog.

My human said that December 19 is special to her in another way too because in 2009, that was when the Phoenix Greyhound Park closed its doors forever. I raced there and then raced in Tucson too.

Yes, I am forever lucky.

I would like to thank Jenny at Greyhounds-2-Go who took me in and then let my Karyn adopt me. Four paws up to Jenny! Here’s a photo of Jenny at the Greyhound Fall Festival. One of her dogs broke her pelvis racing. That must have hurt really badly. The hound is fortunate that Jenny rescued her.

Hugs to Greyhounds-2-Go

Jenny rocks!

The top photo of me was taken at the school where I go sometimes. The teacher Ms. Vigo teaches a class on animal compassion and animal cruelty. Karyn tells them about dog racing and how to adopt a greyhound. The kids are fun and ask the best questions. Then we have a love fest.

In the top photo, the kids knew it was my birthday so one girl brought a party hat for me to wear. I also got some presents. The Bee was too big for my skinny head but I humored them. Somehow I cannot see myself as a bumble bee. Buzz off.

This next photo is Ms. Vigo and her class and me. It was a great day and I hope they keep inviting me back. I am happy to go to other schools and visit people who need cheering up. While I am kind and on my best behavior (I don’t mark in inappropriate places), I do not own a pet therapy vest.

Jett Greyhound visits the school.

Forgot my homework

It does appear that Karyn has invited some of her friends over on Monday so I just might be getting some dog treats. Jett Greyhound can never have enough dog treats.

My life is very interesting and have many canine friends visiting. More about that later.

What you see is what you Jett.

Love ya, the Jett-Setter

Blog post written by Jett Greyhound, Tucson jett-setter

Yo boys and girls and my 4-legged friends,

A couple of weeks ago, my human love slave Karyn took me to a middle school here in Tucson. Ms. Vigo did a lesson on dogs and compassion and since I’m a dog — a greyhound to be exact — I was invited to be part of the lesson. The lesson also included a portion about dog racing and adopting a greyhound.

Karyn answered questions asked by the students.

The kids were sure smart and loveable. I loved them all and licked most of them. I got so excited I jumped on the principal but she said she didn’t mind. I also poked my nose in all the classrooms with open doors. Greyhounds are nosy, me especially.

Karyn was relieved that I didn’t relieve myself in an inappropriate spot. If she’s relieved, then I’m relieved.

I hope they invite us back because one of the boys was afraid of dogs until he met me.

Life is good here and full of surprises but more about that next time.

Until then…

Hugs & treats from your Jett Greyhound

Tucson Greyhound: Jett’s Gotcha Day 2011/08/14

The following is written by Jett Greyhound, the Jett-setter

Friday – August 12 – was my “gotcha” day.  I’m not sure what that means but my human Karyn seemed all excited about it when she picked me up at The Greyt Escape. I didn’t get any presents or  special treats though. She kept saying happy happy “gotcha, gotcha, gotcha.”

I have been living in this crazy household for one year and it sure beats a crate at the dog track.

I can sleep all day and I get to eat really good food and treats.

My human loves on me and this house is my bed.  I sleep on the dog beds, the human bed, the sofa, and the bed on the patio.  It’s all mine but sometimes I share.

Not only do I get two-legged visitors but lots of four-legged visitors.

My favorite four-legged visitor is Donut. She is sweet. We love on each other and sometimes she lays on my dog bed while I’m on it too!  I like Donut so much that sometimes she lays on the human bed with Karyn and there’s no space for me. That’s okay as I lay nearby. I am a gentleman.

Freckled Friends - Jett & Donut

Donut and her human and me and my human take long walks and hang out. Donut is sweet. Once she visited for four days without her human and life was just about perfect.

Another friend is Carter.  He came last year before he got adopted and he was a cool dude.  Then he got lost and my human was out of her mind looking for him. (She didn’t lose him.)   Then he got found and came to visit with his human. It was good to see him.  Then he just came again for 12 days to stay with us. We are good buddies. My human loves Carter very much. He loves to play with my toys and so I let him.

Tucson greyhound

Cozy Carter

A few weeks ago this all white dude named Petey stayed here. He was just off the dog track and being neutered. He’s all white with some freckles. We love freckles. Petey was fun. My human fell in love with Petey or so she said. I heard he got adopted by a nice family and that makes me happy.

Tucson greyhound

Go Petey!

Then there is Saffron. Her human and my human are friends too. Saffron is a bit of an older woman but very kind. I went to visit her at her new house which is closer to mine so I’m sure we will become better pals.

Tucson greyhound

Seductive Saffron

One day I went to visit someone who had an older greyhound named Harmony (she flirted with me) and a small dog Mimzy who was the boss of us all.  And on two separate occasions other dogs stayed a short while – Torque who marked everything and  Daisy who growled at me.

So as you can see I am a popular boy dog and have friends too.

Life is good. I hope that every greyhound dog has the chance to live a wonderful life like me.  And happy “gotcha” to you too.

Jett Greyhound meets David Rosenfelt

Jett loves David Rosenfelt

Written by Jett Greyhound

In case your are clueless, I am the JETT-Setter.

The photo on top is me and my person meeting the world-famous mystery writer David Rosenfelt. My person coordinated a fundraiser for GREY2K USA and the Humane Society of Southern Arizona. In this photo we are at Clues Unlimited mystery bookstore in Tucson. A big kissy THANK YOU goes to Chris Burke and to Mr. Rosenfelt for permitting this awesomely fun and fundraising event to happen.

Chris has a greyhound named Canelo and he’s the store dog. A Golden Retriever was also present but when I tried to make friends, all I got were growls so that was that. I worked the people crowd instead. Jerry and Kathy Tucker are my new best friends and Auntie Jean Rettus always makes me smile.

People bought chances to have their pet’s name in David Rosenfelt’s next book. Lots of greyhounds were entered plus other dog breeds as well as cats and three pot-bellied pigs from 24 states and the UK. As luck would have it, Cuveé won!  Cuveé lives in Tucson and greets customers at CataVinos Wine Shoppe.

Cuvee the rescue dog

Won the mystery contest!

Aside from a famous author, I have met Kyra Batte, Miss Pima County 2011. She is pretty, sparkly, and smells nice.  I went to a photo shoot for The Pet Friendly Traveler.    Our friend Edie Jarolim wrote the script and I was one of a few dogs paw-stur-ing in front of the camera. I’m a natural. I’m in this video!

Much more in my life has happened as I have many more 4-legged friends now but I’ll save that for next time…

Until then…what you see is what you JETT…Greyhound – xox

Jett Greyhound

Jett Greyhound here

I turned 5 years old on December 19, 2010. That was my birthday. I heard through the greyhound grapevine that I’m supposed to be lavished with presents but that did not happen. My human did make me chicken soup with smashed carrots and rice and I ate that for four days. It was heavenly. I was supposed to get a new collar but that didn’t happen either. My human said I’m getting one soon.

Then another hound came to stay for awhile. His name was Carter and he was a cool guy after we growled at each other a few times. I was trying to dominate him and he wouldn’t let me. He stayed for 8 days while his foster mom went to Texas. When he left, Karyn stood at the door weeping and I whimpered.

Foster greyhound Carter finds comfort

A few hours after he left, Mary Jo came. She is Karyn’s best friend. She’s fun. I slept with her every night. She didn’t mind and we cuddled. Lots of people came to visit when she was here. The house was full of laughter and pets and treats.

After she left it was kind of depressing but my Karyn is just so busy, so unorganized, and so forgetful.

A couple weeks ago Auntie Glenda came and brought her two greyhounds Beamer and Anabel. I think Karyn forgot to take photos. Beamer is a big boy and marked in the living room. Not cool Beams! Then we all went outside. I think I’m in love with Anabel. She’s a fiery wench. She and I did the tango two times until Beamer broke it up. Chill Beamer! You live with her. I’m only trying to make some time with her.

I would like Anabel to come and visit again and leave Beamer at home. We must tango some more.

Our clicker trainer came to a halt because Karyn was too busy but I think we’re going to start up again. The other day on our walk Karyn couldn’t keep up with me and missed the curb and fell. She dropped the leash and I started off without her. Fortunately, for her I know “Jett COME!” and I came back and she grabbed my leash. I just stood there counting the minutes until she could get up. She was saying some bad words as she tried to stand up. Her elbow was bleeding too.

But she’s a trooper or so they say, and we finished the walk instead of turning around, as the show must go on.

I’m hoping to have some new adventures soon and perhaps I’ll meet you too.

Love and tail wags

Donut & Jett

Jett Greyhound here.

I’ve had an exciting month.

We have lots of visitors but mostly 2-legged but recently we had some 4-legged visitors for me to play with.

First there was Donut Greyhound. She’s a sweetie, a wild girl. Wild girls are fun. Don’t let anyone tell you differently. Her person is Judith and she’s a friend of my person, Karyn.

Judith brought Donut and we hit it off right away. I have a double backyard and we played and played and played. She was rough and tumble. We played and played some more.

Donut looks a bit like me except she’s petite and has blue brindle patches. That’s her and me in the top photo. Don’t we make a cute couple?

Then we came inside and Donut found every one of my toys that I don’t play with and brought them into the living room to play with them. Of course, then I found the toys interesting and wanted them.

Karyn and Judith talked, talked, talked while me and Donut rested.

Then they left and I whined. Karyn calls me Whiny Boy. What’s a little whiny between friends?

Someone from another continent was living here for awhile. She was afraid of dogs but learned to love me. She called me, “Jett, LEAVE IT!”

A week after my rough play with Donut, I started limping and Karyn was beside herself. We went to the vet and I got Metacam and after six days the limping stopped. Then we went to another vet and found out I have the Valley Fever antibodies inside me. My titer is 1:4. I’m borderline, whatever that is. Anyway for now, I’m just being monitored and well taken care of.

You would think that is enough for one month but oh, no.  It was cold here and Karyn turned on the heater and the noise frightens me. I didn’t want to come into the house. Karyn and Phyllis, the clicker lady, and I are working on it.

Then another greyhound came to visit – Saffron. Karyn had a beading bee and some of her friends sat around the table making these shiny things, eating, and laughing.

Loren brought Saffron. She was a pretty little thing but unlike Donut she didn’t want to play. Darn!

Saffron liked to hang out with the people. So being the good host, I hung out with her.  Here’s a picture of Saffron on the couch and me on the rug.

One of the best things about this whole month is – on Monday night it was really really cold and Karyn put me on her bed. She put me on there once before and I was scared and jumped off. This time I buried myself under the covers and stayed and stayed and stayed.

Now I am also known as a Bed Hog.

Jett lounging at Greyt Escape

Hey world and Tucson – posted by Jett Greyhound

Life is greyt here.

Unlike the previous greyhound who lived here, the Drama Queen, I don’t chew stuff. Instead I just move things around especially things that smell like my person Karyn.  She calls me The Decorator.

So much has happened since I blogged last time. I am supposedly exuberant…whatever that means.

One day Karyn took me to this cool place where I met a lot of greyhounds. Then another day she took me again but left without me. At first I didn’t like that but I liked the dogs and Michelle and felt right at home at Greyt Escape. I even got to counter surf some cheese and bark at the javelina from afar. Man, they are ugly. When Karyn came back for me, I did the happy dance.

Another day Karyn came to give me a big hug and put her arms around me and started crying. I thought maybe she hurt that hole in her heart. She rocked me gently and said, “Baby boy, I am so very sorry that you raced 150 times.  Let the good times roll. I’m going to spoil you rotten.”  I can hardly wait!

I’ve been meeting lots of people. There’s an endless parade of people who come to visit us.

Now I am doing clicker training. She clicks this thing and I come and then I get a treat. What’s not to like?

Here’s a little secret. I am the perfect height to put my head on the dining room table. People who don’t have dogs won’t like this story.  Anyway one day Karyn was starting to eat a Chipotle bowl but got up to get a drink. When she turned around I had stuck my entire face in the bowl. She yelled, “LEAVE IT!”  I backed away from the table but there were incriminating lettuce strands sticking out of my mouth. I was this close to getting some of that chicken.

Fortunately, my lovely person Karyn laughed.  Ha ha ha. She has the best sense of humor.

By for now.

What you see is what your JETT.

Jett Greyhound: Hello World!

Hello Tucson and the World

I am Jett Greyhound. I am a retired racing greyhound. I use to race around the dog track here in Tucson.

My person has a lot to say about that and none of it is good. She uses cuss words that I am not allowed to repeat. I am a good boy and a gentleman so I won’t repeat them.

Anyway, she refuses to talk about my racing name, how many races I ran which she says the industry data is not up to date so it’s a moot point, whatever that is.

My person Karyn says the only thing that matters is — I am here now in a home with three soft dog beds.

Wow!

I heard through the greyt vine that I have big paws to fill as Karyn recently lost her almost 13 year old greyhound Lily, aka Drama Queen.  My person said she had a big hole in her heart and I was here to fill it.

A hole in the heart sounds painful.

I can fill the hole and make Karyn feel better.

We’re going to have a great life together. You’ll just have to wait and see…

Today I went to the Save More Animals adopt-a-thon at a nice hotel in a carpeted ballroom. I got microchipped. Karyn almost fainted when she saw the vet insert a long needle into me. As for me, Jett Greyhound, I didn’t feel a thing. My god-mama Cynthia made me feel so brave.

That was my debut out and I met a lot of people, kids, and lots of dogs, like more greyhounds and found out I was really popular with the Golden Retrievers. I stuck my needle nose into their inner circle.

That’s me in the photo. Aren’t I a handsome boy?
