Midwest - here I come

Midwest – here I come

For the month of May, Beading Divas to the Rescue is so very proud to be raising funds for the Greyhound Alliance’s Sunburst Project & Kennel.

The Greyhound Alliance’s Sunburst Project and Kennel opened in August 2011 and since then has moved more than 1,600 retired racers to adoption.

Retired racing greyhounds from Ebro, Pensacola, and JCKC/Monticello dog tracks have gone to 38 adoption groups in 22 states and Canada. Last year, The Sunburst Kennel took in more than 250 greyhounds during the JCKC/Monticello season and closing.

This week many Sunburst hounds are on the move:
–15 hounds headed to adoption groups in the West
–32 to East Coast adoption groups
–on May 4–45 hounds will be on their way to adoption groups in Kentucky, Michigan, Illinois and Wisconsin

Yowza! This is a 92-hound week!

The Greyhound Alliance is located in Illinois but saw a huge need to help retired racing greyhounds leave Florida where there are 13 dog tracks. Kudos to all involved in this extensive endeavor.

I'm worth saving

I’m worth saving

You may remember Tucson-based Smiling Dog Rescue when last year around this same time 29 pit bull pups were seized from a home in a Huachuca City puppy mill. The dogs had no signs of fighting tendencies.

According to the article, Rica Powell, the founder of Smiling Dog Rescue spoke up in court, letting the judge know that their organization was known to be the third largest pit bull rescue group in the world, and that in the last 5 years, they had rescued more than 1,000 pit bulls in the Tucson area.

The dogs were released to Smiling Dog Rescue and as this month progresses we hope to find out what happened to them.

In the meantime, BUY BRACELETS to help raise funds for this worthy group.

operation greyhound saved me

Happy Magda

One of the dark sides of the racing industry involves the mistreatment of the greyhounds by their handlers behind the scenes. Thousands of greyhounds each year face a death sentence for failure to deliver a winning performance in the economic arena called racing.

Some are extremely mistreated. Beaten. Starved.

Magdalena came to Operation Greyhound as one of those mistreated dogs. So terrified of all humans, Magda hid in the back of her crate, wanting no contact with humans.

Through Operation Greyhound’s patience and love, she slowly began to emerge. After three months of care, Operation Greyhound decided they could do no more for her in their facility and she was sent into a foster home with other greyhounds so she could start to rebuild her social skills and learn to trust.

Slowly Magda is becoming a new dog.

The first month she spent hiding in a back bedroom and would only run outside pressed against the walls, coming out only at night while everyone else was sleeping to explore. At 3 a.m. she would start to discover toys and bones. Playing like crazy in the dark until she was discovered. Shredding newspapers. Roaching. A new personality emerged.

Although she has been in foster care for five months, Magda has a long way to go. She has mastered car rides and dog parks like a veteran. Playing with toys and bones does not occur only in the dark.

Magda likes car rides

Magda likes car rides

However, trusting humans will take longer – still preferring not to take food from a human hand – she eats in privacy away from everyone else.
But her need for love brings her out of her shell more and more often – cuddling with her humans on the bed for brief moments, a brief kiss, a lean, are cherished events.

The foster mommy and daddy adopted Magda.

—————-
One has to wonder — what the hell happened to Magda?

Operation Greyhound is the best! Please consider buying a bracelet or three. Mothers Day is right around the corner. Buy a green one for St. Patrick’s Day. There’s even a bracelet named Magda (now that’s a coincidence); it’s beautiful bursting with color.

If you don’t need a bracelet, consider making a donation to Operation Greyhound.

Puppy Moses and his mother

Puppy Moses and his mother

Beading Divas Bracelets benefit Operation Greyhound for February 2012

Occasionally, Operation Greyhound will involve puppies!

Operation Greyhound received a call from the Agua Caliente Race Track in Mexico that a female (Fontiera) had given birth and asked Operation Greyhound to pick her up along with her puppies.

Immediately Operation Greyhound left for Tijuana but upon arrival, was informed all of the puppies except for one had not survived. Fontiera had been kept in a kennel so small and dark she could hardly turn around. She had accidentally stepped on her puppies.

Operation Greyhound rescued Fontiera and the remaining baby, who was then 10 days old, but upon arrival at the facility noticed that something was wrong with his little back leg. He was immediately taken to the vet and x-rays revealed that one of his leg bones was turned around and would probably need surgery to correct it when he got a little older. The vet felt Fontiera had probably stepped on him also.

Watch Moses’ Youtube video.

The puppy was named Moses, as he was the only survivor. More x-rays were taken a month later and the vet explained what the surgery would entail. Basically he would have to spend his entire puppyhood in leg casts and surgeries going from smaller to bigger as he got older, a nightmare for this poor baby.

Operation Greyhound made the decision to wait since there was no discomfort of any kind. Moses stayed with his mommy for two months and then he was taken in at his foster home with other greyhounds. As his leg grew, the defect was noticed less and at three months Moses was such a bouncy boy, you would never know he had a leg problem.

happy endings

Moses and his mother all grown up – adopted together

The decision was made with vet approval, that the surgery would only be cosmetic and therefore Operation Greyhound would not put Moses through all that pain and suffering. The foster mommy and daddy adopted Moses.

Rescue a Golden, AZ

Rescue a Golden, AZ

For the month of January, Beading Divas to the Rescue is selling bracelets for Rescue a Golden on Arizona (RAGofAZ)

RAGofAZ’s vet bill for 2012 was $132,936.58; they rescued/rehomed 167 dogs.

That is amazing!

When Rescue a Golden sees a dog on Craig’s List, they send a letter explaining that they cannot purchase a dog, but can make sure it goes to a good home. Sometimes people are very rude and say nasty things about not giving their dog to a rescue for free to have RAGofAZ to turn around and make a profit by charging an adoption fee.

Adoption fees don’t even come close to the cost of vetting a dog prior to adoption. Most of these dogs come in needing to be spayed/neutered; it’s rare to get a dog that’s up to date on vaccinations. So many are surrendered because they have severe illnesses or injuries resulting in thousands of dollars of vetting fees.

There you have it — the true story of pet rescue.

While you can donate any time to the Goldens, you only have until the end of January to buy some bracelets on their behalf. Bracelet sales have been slow this month; let’s rev it up.

You can buy bracelets online here – the entire cost of the bracelet ($20) goes to the Goldens. We do charge for shipping & handling.

Locally, you can buy bracelets here:
–Silver Sea Jewelry & Gifts, 330 N. 4th Avenue, 624-9954
–Clues Unlimited Mystery Book Store, 3146 E. Fort. Lowell Road (SE corner Country Club), 326-8533 (closed Sun/Mon)
-A K Jensen Apparel, (St. Philips Plaza), 4340 N. Campbell Ave., Suite 72, 529-2775

You can also donate beads to the Bead Drive 2013 on Rescue a Goldens behalf.

Bead Drive 2013

Bead Drive 2013

Yep, it’s that time of year again when Beading Divas to the Rescue need more beads. Since 2009, we have sold more than 3,000 bracelets for animal charities. We rock!

But as you can imagine that is a whole lot of beads.

We are encouraging all the animal rescues that we have raised money for — to tell your Facebook likes, your adopters, and volunteers to donate beads on behalf of your group.

One lucky group will be randomly chosen to receive sales in April. The last time we held a Bead Drive was late 2010 – early 2011. Greyhound Support Transport of Florida won! They raised $1,740.00 during their winning month. The bead drive is open to any 501 c3 animal charity in the continental U.S.

Here are the rules & fine print.

If you are local to the Tucson area, you can drop off beads at these numerous locations or we can try to arrange pick up — ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE HERE FOR THE GEM SHOW.

TO MAIL BEADS, PLEASE SEND TO:
Greyt Escape
c/o Beading Divas
12150 East 5th Street
Tucson, AZ 85748

One thing you might not know is that all the money raised goes back to the groups. Bracelets cost $20 and the groups receive the entire $20. For online sales, we do charge shipping & handling and with that money pay for postage & mailing supplies. We chip in money when needed to buy memory wire, paw charms, and findings.

Who is this hunk?

photo from celebritysunglasseswatcher.com

Some hot sunglasses — you know the kind that celebrities wear — are for auction now on EBAY. They are sexy. They are fashionable. They grace the pages of Vanity Fair. The money raised for the sale of the sunglasses will go towards our supplies and some wild bead buying (we cannot enter the bead drive drawing). So check it out! Here and here.

We don’t know who the hunk is above. Do you? Kanye and Usher are pictured wearing sunglasses like the ones on eBay. Men with their own sense of style embrace these sunglasses. Go bid!

Nala-golden

Nala’s story

“Just wanted everyone to know how grateful I am for all the help RAGofAZ has provided to me. As some of you may or may not know, some nice doctor saved my life and contacted the organization. Fortunately, timing is everything. There was an immediate family that wanted me and was more than willing to take care of me and all my needs.

I moved from the big city to the country. I am intrigued by the quietness and all the wildlife that surrounds me; especially all those rabbits. I now have two 20 lb. cans of delicious nutritious food and am almost at my normal weight. I am no longer timid about eating.

My ear infection is all clear. My mommy said she had dealt with this in the past and knew how to handle it. I squealed and squirmed when I had my first bath. I was afraid of the running bath water, but enjoyed the shower. It took both my mommy & daddy to bathe me. I guess after I was toweled dried and massaged, the bath wasn’t so bad after all!

I am being educated in music. I am learning to love “The Rock”; (that’s Rachmaninoff for those of you who don’t know) and other classical music. In addition, my daddy likes the 40′s music and my mommy gets energized with the 50′s.

I am obsessed with playing ball and now have found my voice, when I want to play more. I have lots of squeaky toy friends and at night, I like to sleep with my beaver. I still cry from time to time, but am getting better about it. My family always says Nala’s home after I have been out to the doctor or shopping.

I am enjoying the cool indoors and sleeping in a bed. I guess you can say I am “Queen of the Manor”.

Kisses, Paws & Waggin’ Tales to all the Goldens & everyone at RAGofAZ! ~ Nala

rescue a golden of arizona

where every dog matters

Beading Divas to the Rescue is proud to be sponsoring Rescue a Golden of AZ (RAGofAZ) for January 2013. Here is one of their stories written by a volunteer:

Harley’s Heroes

Harley’s story begins with an email received on a Friday morning from our Shelter Walker Team Coordinator, Ed Karsten, about a sick Golden at the Casa Grande Pinal Shelter. Harley was listed as “sick” on the Pinal County Shelter list. Ed contacted the Shelter early that Friday morning and they agreed to release Harley to RAGofAZ as a “medical foster” so we could provide the medical attention he needed. Harley had growths on the outside of his throat and was not eating.

Harley, 10 years old, was abandoned by his owner at a Circle K. He walked up to a customer who was standing in front of the Circle K and asked if he would hold onto his dog while he ran in to pick up something. The owner walked in the front door and went right out the back – never coming back for his 4- legged friend. The customer surrendered Harley to the Pinal County Shelter on Wednesday September 27, 2012.

By 11AM on Friday we had two Transport Team volunteers en route to Casa Grande to pick up Harley.

By 3PM on Friday Harley was met at the vet clinic by our Vet Care Liaison and Vet Care Coordinator. Harley had a broken tooth, very red gums, malnourished, matted hair and very large tumor-like growths on his body. It was a Friday evening, so the decision was to board him at the vet for further evaluation and treatment.

On Saturday morning, after viewing the x-rays, the examining vet determined that Harley had a large tumor on his lungs and advanced Valley Fever. His recommendation was to euthanize.

At 1PM on Saturday afternoon, the Vet Care Liaison, Vet Care Coordinator, and our Director of Golden Operations gathered around Harley and whispered loving words in his ear. This wonderful boy is no longer in any pain. A beautiful soul became an angel that day.

Harley’s Heroes:
–Ed Karsten
–Norm Fee
–Orlando Baker
–Nancy Baker
–Kay Fee

Do we wish we could have made a difference in Harley’s life? You bet… If only we could have gotten him sooner, before the tumor grew to the size it did. Yet, we know he passed away in the loving arms of 3 people who loved him and knew what a great companion he was.

It’s our policy, whenever possible, to not let a dog go to the Rainbow Bridge without first being adopted. The Vet Care Coordinator, Nancy Baker and her husband became Harley’s adopted family before she helped him to the Bridge.

This is a shining example of what rescue groups do. Kudos to Rescue a Golden of AZ for sharing this touching story and the work they do for Golden Retriever rescue.

You can help them out by making a donation to their group or buying some bracelets. All bracelets are one-of-kind and made with donated beads. Bracelets cost $20 and the entire $20 is given to the group. Cash and checks made payable to RAGofAZ are accepted. (Sorry no credit cards.)

You can buy bracelets locally in Tucson at:

–Silver Sea Jewelry & Gifts, 330 N. 4th Avenue, 624-9954
–Clues Unlimited Mystery Book Store, 3146 E. Fort. Lowell Road (SE corner Country Club), 326-8533 (closed Sun/Mon)
-A K Jensen Apparel, (St. Philips Plaza), 4280 N. Campbell Ave., Suite 212, 529-2775

If you order online, add $5.50 for S & H. International orders, add $7.50. Orders are usually shipped within 2 to 3 days. More bracelets will be added online after January 7.
